The Scottish Qualifications Authority is Scotland's national awarding and accreditation body. We are trusted to oversee thousands of qualifications that are available in schools, colleges and workplaces, not just in this country, but around the world.

We are seeking an experienced Data Protection and Records Manager to join our Strategic Planning & Governance team. This is a vital role within the organisation, responsible for ensuring that SQA meets its legal obligations under data protection and records management legislation.

As SQA's designated Data Protection Officer (DPO), the successful candidate will play a key role in shaping and maintaining our compliance framework. You must be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of data protection legislation, particularly the UK GDPR, and have a strong track record of implementing effective information governance practices.

The successful candidate will be required to maintain and develop systems and controls to enable SQA and its employees to comply with their obligations under data protection legislation. Additionally, the successful candidate will develop and support implementation of a culture of quality records management practice across the organisation.

To do this you must be able to demonstrate experience in the following specific duties:

  • Provide expert advice and guidance on data protection legislation, ensuring all staff understand and meet their responsibilities.
  • Develop and maintain policies, procedures and training programmes that embed data protection and records management into everyday practice.
  • Support the development of data protection impact assessments
  • Lead on data breach response and reporting.
  • Manage the response to subject access requests to ensure that responses are issued within one month of receipt.
  • Maintain and enhance SQA's Records Management Plan, promoting effective information lifecycle management.
  • Lead on improvement initiatives to strengthen SQA's information governance framework, taking a proactive, solutions-based approach to embed compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Line manage and support the development of a Data Protection Analyst and a Records & Information Officer.

Additionally, you must be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

  • Have excellent interpersonal skills
  • Have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Public sector experience would be desirable but not mandatory
  • Have experience in leading and directing business change

Applicants, as a minimum, should be educated to SCQF Level 9 (post graduate qualification in records and/or information management) and/or be able to demonstrate direct relevant experience for this role. Applicants must also have expert knowledge of data protection law and practices and should ideally have a recognised data protection qualification.
