What we're looking for:

A highly skilled CNC Machinist with strong experience in operating large 3-axis and 5-axis milling machines. This role is ideally suited to a professional who is conversant with Heidenhain machine controls and Correa milling machines, and who is capable of programming with PowerMill or HyperMill CAM software. You will be machining complex, high-precision components and tooling for high-value projects, with a focus on accuracy, repeatability, and lean manufacturing practices.

Specific Responsibilities

Machine Setup & Operation:

  • Set up and operate CNC machines (milling, turning, grinding, etc.) based on technical drawings and production instructions.
  • Load programs and adjust offsets, tooling, and fixtures as required

Programming & Editing:

  • Write CNC programs at the machine control and off line using Hypermill / Powermill for 1 offs and small production runs of small components and large fabrications.
  • Input, modify, CNC programs (using Heidenhain,Fanuc etc.) for production runs
  • Support the development of new machining processes and prototypes.

Quality & Inspection:

  • Carry out first-off and in-process inspection using precision instruments (verniers, micrometres, height gauges, CMM, etc.).
  • Ensure machined components meet dimensional and surface finish specifications.
  • Complete quality documentation, including ISIRs or control plans if applicable.

Tooling & Maintenance:

  • Monitor tool wear, replace inserts, and maintain tool life logs. Inform supervision of tooling usage.
  • Perform basic machine maintenance and report defects.

Collaboration:

  • Liaise with Quality, Engineering, and Production Control departments to resolve machining issues and support production flow.
  • Assist apprentices or junior team members with training and mentoring.

Health & Safety:

  • Adhere to all company health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Operate machinery and equipment in a safe and responsible manner at all times.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Suggest improvements to machining efficiency, tool life, or part quality.

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in CNC milling of large structures and tooling, including 5-axis machining.
  • Strong proficiency in Heidenhain CNC controls.
  • Experience with Correa machines or other large gantry/bed milling machines.
  • Skilled in CAM programming with PowerMill or HyperMill.
  • Solid understanding of machining best practices, tooling, and material behavior.
  • Ability to work to tight tolerances with a focus on quality and process efficiency.
  • Effective communicator and team player with a proactive mindset.
  • Technical or vocational qualification in CNC machining or manufacturing (preferred but not required).

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 3 or City & Guilds in CNC Machining / Mechanical Engineering
  • Completion of a recognised engineering apprenticeship
  • Additional CNC programming certification (optional)

We have 3 permanent positions, 2 on days and 1 on nights, both working 39 hours per week

Days 6.30 - 16.45 Monday to Thursday

Nights 16.30 -02.45 Monday to Thursday

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: £17.20-£25.00 per hour

Expected hours: 39 per week
