Who are we?
First Rail Consultancy provides specialist services across the public transport sector, nationally and internationally. We work closely with other FirstGroup plc businesses, including operators Avanti West Coast, Great Western Railway, South Western Railway, Hull Trains, and or all-electric Edinburgh to London service, Lumo. We are part of the team advising the DfT on the future operation of HS2. We also provide consultancy services for First Bus, London Trams and external clients
We provide a wide range of services to meet our clients' needs in areas including customer experience, branding, data analysis, engineering, project management, editorial work and training design. We also engage in commercial activity for First Group plc to expand our business, both nationally and internationally. This work encompasses everything from contract bids and business planning to developing software solutions and new transport services

We have assembled an experienced team with knowledge of a range of relevant disciplines. As a consultancy team, we regularly work on multiple assignments for different clients at the same time. This requires a high level of self-management and the ability to identify and manage unplanned changes. Reflecting this, we take great pride in being a friendly, inclusive and caring team. About the job
The HR and Resourcing Manager is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of human resources practices and processes. This role focuses on areas such as recruitment, employee relations, performance management, training & development and resource deployment. The manager ensures the company attracts, hires, develops, and retains qualified employees.
Your main responsibilities will be:
- Recruitment and Selection: Oversee the recruitment process, from job posting to hiring, ensuring a smooth and efficient candidate experience.
- Employee Relations: Act as a point of contact for employment-related inquiries, resolving issues and promoting a positive work environment.
- Performance Management: Implement performance review procedures, including setting objectives, employee evaluations, and feedback sessions.
- Training and Development: Identify training needs and organize training programs to enhance employee skills and performance.
- HR Policies: Develop, review, and implement HR policies and procedures in line with legal requirements and best practices.
- Resource allocation and deployment: Ensure resources are allocated efficiently, maximising utilisation of teams; tracking and reporting to senior management.
You'll need to be:
- Strong leadership and people management skills.
- Excellent decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
- Highly organised and detail-oriented.
- Ability to handle confidential information.
- Strong ethical standards and integrity.
As a minimum, you will need to have:
- Proven experience as a HR Manager or similar role.
- Strong understanding of recruitment processes and HR best practices.
- Knowledge of labour legislation and payroll processes.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Bachelor's or master's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or relevant field.
