Job Responsibility:

Our strength is in delivering large and major projects project within WSP where the scale of the project, fee value and project governance dictate the requirements to add further management to ensure project risks and opportunities are considered by competent managers within similar project experience.

We have experience of delivering WSP commissions under various forms of contract whether these are NEC-PSC or other bespoke contract agreements. We understand the importance of managing our commissions in accordance with these contractual arrangements and balance the administration of this with Client relations.

As part of this commission management role we will provide the commercial and financial controls to the project along with the reporting of this within the business.

Job Summary: The Assistant Design Manager will support Design Managers and PMs/PDs in managing and organising architects, structural engineers, services engineers, and specialist designers. The goal is to produce a coordinated, timely, and compliant design in accordance with defined scopes of duties and WSP systems, mission, and values. The Assistant Design Manager will also support Project Management and Design commissions to achieve safe, sustainable, and efficient outcomes that meet agreed profit and client satisfaction objectives .

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in managing the design process using commercial, contractual, program/time awareness, and technical skills.
  • Help establish a client brief with defined project benefits, scope, goals, and deliverables.
  • Support with advising clients about their obligations in the development of a building design.
  • Encourage and inspire design consultants to produce their best work using their full flair, experience, resources, and talents in a cost-effective way.
  • Assist with ensuring the design process recognizes current legislation, standards, and codes of practice, where appropriate.
  • Monitor that design information is of the right quality and keeps pace with project timescales.
  • Help coordinate the elimination of health and safety risks in the design and financial risks during construction.
  • Track project deliverables using appropriate tools.
  • Monitor and report on the progress of the project.
  • Participate in project evaluations and assessment of results.
  • Support the preparation and presentation of internal reports.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Preferably degree-qualified in a business management, construction, design, or related discipline.
  • Working toward becoming a member of an appropriate professional institutions e.g. APM, ICE
  • Awareness of construction contracts and processes.
  • Experience of managing projects using a structured project control process.
  • Typically more than 2 years post-graduate experience

Skills and Competencies;

  • Fully aware of all WSP training program requirements and evidences commitment towards these.
  • Demonstrable ability to know when to escalate certain matters to a manager or project leader.
  • Able to attend external meetings independently.
  • Takes full ownership and responsibility for successful delivery of all work set.
  • Understands best practice delivery processes and when to use them.
  • Demonstrates willingness to understand WSP financial management platform for projects and the associated processes.
  • Spends a proportionate amount of time on tasks set, prioritizing tasks that have the most commercial impact for the business.
  • Establishes relationships by delivering exceptional client service, whether internal or external, and understands the importance of maintaining these.
  • Able to prioritize client requirements and manage expectations without compromising on delivery.
  • Provides input into business development and contributes to marketing activities, as appropriate.
