About the role

We are seeking a dedicated individual to join our Inclusion Team and support Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service on its vital Inclusion journey. This role is pivotal in fostering a positive, welcoming environment where current and future staff feel valued, heard, and empowered to be their authentic selves. As an Inclusion Advisor, you will be a key resource for support, guidance, and awareness-raising within the organisation on all matters related to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI).

In this role, you will be instrumental in creating and nurturing a culture of inclusivity and respect. Your responsibilities will include listening to and engaging with colleagues to understand their needs and experiences, championing EDI initiatives, and developing and disseminating educational opportunities to promote inclusivity. You will also be tasked with managing your workload efficiently while collaborating with others, ensuring that EDI communications and events are effectively organised and celebrated.

Key skills essential for this role include excellent listening and interpersonal abilities to connect with colleagues at all levels, strong advocacy for EDI principles, and the capability to create and deliver educational content. Additionally, you should be adept at managing your tasks independently while working collaboratively, and have experience supporting and organising communications and events that highlight and celebrate Inclusion.

Key responsibilities:

§ Managing the key EDI calendar dates, ensuring that these are communicated and celebrated throughout the service.

§ Assist with the development and monitoring of EDI strategies, actions plans and measurable goals.

§ Provide training, education and advice on EDI matters.

§ Assist with designing and implementing Positive Action initiatives.

§ Supporting the Inclusion Manager in the day to day running of the Inclusion Team.

We are seeking a candidate who has demonstrable experience of:

§ Stakeholder engagement and collaboration.

§ Data Analysis and reporting.

§ Advisory and consultative support/

§ Training and education.

§ Designing, implantation and evaluating EDI strategies and actions plans.

§ Writing, reviewing and evaluating Equality Impact Assessments.

A key focus for the Inclusion Team is to address the specific needs and challenges faced by underrepresented groups within the fire and rescue service. This includes supporting LGBTQ+ employees, ethnic minorities, women, and those with disabilities.

Through targeted initiatives such as mentorship programs, support networks, and career development opportunities, the team works to break down barriers and create a more inclusive and supportive workplace.

In addition to internal efforts, the Inclusion Team at TWFRS actively engages with the wider community. They collaborate with local organisations, schools, and community groups to promote fire safety and careers in the fire and rescue service, especially among underrepresented communities. The successful applicant will be subject to our pre-employment screening process which includes an occupational health medical and substance abuse test. We will also conduct right to work, DBS and reference checks.

Pension statement

Please note, if you have been employed as an Operational Firefighter, and are in receipt of a Firefighter's pension, your pension may be abated if you are appointed. Abatement will occur if your pension plus your new salary adds up to more than your previous salary upon retirement - further details can be provided on request. It's also worth noting that you may also be affected by HMRC rules and should check with the HMRC to see if this applies to you.
