Job Introduction

BCP Council has an incredible rangeof sites managed for nature. From harbours and seafront cliffs, to urbanheathlands, woodlands, saltmarsh and meadows. With 13 SSSI’s, SPAs, RAMSARsites and Local Nature Reserves, our sites have extensive areas under agri-environmentalschemes using cattle, ponies, sheep and goats for conservation grazing. Supported by a fantastic army of volunteers and with severalvisitor centres.

Role Purpose

Heathland Mitigation Rangers engage with people and communities to proactively manage BCP Councils urban heathlands. Also delivering conservation work and playing a key role in the Countryside team who manage BCP’s incredible nature reserves.

Heathland Mitigation Rangers are a key focal point to engage with users, to educate and inform on appropriate use of heathlands and their unique wildlife. Enforcement and use of legislation can also be used to manage the sites.

Work with our superb volunteers on habitat management and surveying, undertake regular patrols, work closely with the Dorset Heaths Partnership and wider teams.

Main Responsibilities

Through your patrolling and on-site presence, engagement and education prevent mis-ue of heathlands. Work closely with local stakeholders across the different nature reserves, encouraging positive behaviour.

Perform routine landscape, habitat conservation and maintenance activities, in line with site management to support the appropriate management of heathlands and ensure a safe environment for the public

Support the day-to-day management of livestock, undertaking daily checks, responding to emergencies to ensure healthy and well-managed livestock.

Work in all weathers and conditions to support the wider conservation work of the Countryside team.

Heathland Mitigation Rangers shall have strong people skills, being able to talk to and relate to all users, engaging positively with the community, while being able to address negative behaviours on site.

Work positively with volunteers to support site maintenance, work collaboratively across the team and with partners.

Following a team restructure there are two Heathland Mitigation Ranger vacancies, bringing this part of the team up to 10 people; alongside four new Countryside Ranger roles.
