Job Responsibility:

Background:

Strive for Education was founded in 2020 by Andy and Sonja, originally set up as an Alternative Provision and subsequently registered as an Independent Specialist School. In our Ofsted inspection we were graded ‘Good', with ‘Outstanding' behaviour and attitudes, see: Strive's Ofsted Inspection Report

Strive for Education (Strive) provides education for those who do not attend mainstream school on a full-time basis or who have a specialist provision named in their EHCP. Strive is looking to expand staff capacity by employing an additional Outreach Worker to join our fantastic team. Strive seeks applications from applicants with integrity, imagination and energy for this exciting and unique role.

The school operates from a number of sites throughout Harrogate, this includes North Park Road in Harrogate town centre, which was the original hub. In 2024 Strive opened the Construction Centre in Pannal to offer practical, vocational qualifications alongside core academic and personal development courses. In 2025 Stive is looking to open an additional site north of Harrogate. This site will have a focus on outdoor education, natural environment studies, small animals, bushcraft, horticulture, gardening, landscaping and life skills. This site is pending planning approval for conversion back to education and will also be subject to DfE approval for an expansion of on-roll numbers. From September 2025, Strive will operate an Outreach Programme from Leeds and Harrogate. This will include a series of classrooms, vocational spaces, cooking teaching facilities, social spaces and spacious and private outdoor areas.

Strive Outreach Programme:

Strive is increasing its educational provision and offer for those Young People whose needs can't be met through the specialist core offer in classes of 6. This may include young people who have already attended a specialist setting without success. Higher level needs where being in a core class is not appropriate may include:

  • Episodes of aggressive, violent and/or threatening behaviour
  • High risk-taking behaviours
  • Unsafe responses to demands placed on them
  • Requirement of continued 1:1/2:1 support
  • Significant functioning and communication difficulties
  • Bespoke education which is not aligned to peers
  • Risk assessment ratings which mean being educated in groups is not appropriate
  • Risk assessment ratings which mean following a standard curriculum, which includes travelling off-site, is not appropriate
  • High levels of criminality or risk to others
  • Complex social services involvement due to vulnerability, residential status or other social factors

Unfortunately, these higher-level and complex needs often result lack of suitable placements. However, Strive has developed an Outreach Programme to allow young people to access bespoke and personalised education that effectively meets need and provides the correct level of support outlined in section E & F of their Educational Healthcare plans (EHCP). We are looking for a skilled and qualified practitioner who will add capacity to the Outreach staffing team.

As a post-16 programme primarily, there will be a significant emphasis on preparing for adulthood, developing independence and self-care, personal finance and the being ready for the ‘world of work'. The curriculum will be tailored around the needs and interests of the young person and will be delivered through a blended curriculum to include 1:1, small group work, support at home if required, work experience and support into employment.

We are looking for the ‘right' applicant to add value and contribute in a positive and dynamic way to this exciting and personalised programme. The applicant would help plan, prepare and deliver sessions that would be tailored towards meeting personal objectives. Experience in working with challenging young people with Autism/SEMH is essential. The successful applicant would not require experience in all these areas, or be required to teach all these subjects.

Strive has a Leeds and Harrogate Outreach Programme and the applicant could be based or access either site. The Outreach Programme would have access to all Strive facilities to support the curriculum delivery. The applicant would be required to deliver/support lessons/learning in the areas of Maths, English, sports, outdoor education, cookery, preparing for independent living.

This can be a challenging but rewarding environment, working with young people who may struggle to regulate their emotions at times. Students will at times present challenging behaviours and staff must have the confidence and emotional resilience to deal with this.

Curriculum Offer:

  • Maths and English (Functional Skills and GCSE levels)
  • BTEC Sport and Leading an Active Lifestyle
  • BTEC Catering, Hospitality and Tourism
  • ASDAN IT and Computing
  • Careers and Experiencing Work Short Course (ASDAN) covers Gatsby Good Career Guidance benchmarks.
  • AQA Unit Award Scheme which links to all academic, social and emotional aspects of the Strive curriculum:
  • Hair, Beauty & Make-Up
  • Music & ‘DJ'ing
  • Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE)
  • Outdoor Learning Programme (OLP)
  • Woodwork, homecraft and basic joinery skills
  • Bike mechanics

In addition to specific subject areas, the Outreach Programme offers:

  • Opportunities for work experience and support into employment
  • Careers meetings and independent guidance
  • Preparation for Adult Life (PfA) and independent living
  • Access to enrichment opportunities which include boxing, gardening, pallet craft, animal care, horticulture, golf, climbing, pool, darts, baking, and help and volunteering in the community.

The successful applicant would not require experience in all these areas, or be required to teach all these subjects. Their main skills must be in being able to support young people with high needs to access these areas. Sessions could be 1:1, 2:1 or in small groups and would be determined by a multitude of factors. The applicant may also complete home visits to help the transition process and complete safeguarding checks.

Student Needs:

All students will have some form of SEND needs. Most will either be categorised as Social Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) or Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). Most need extra support to access their work and help and guidance to manage emotions is often needed. Some students experience difficulties that regularly interfere with their social and learning development and have been directed to access specialist provision to receive this support. Students on our Outreach Programme will find it difficult to work in core groups of 6 students with 2 adults.
