Ursus Capital was formed three years ago as the family office for one of Laxey Partners ltd founders. Laxey Partners was a pioneer in activist investing with a focus on listed closed end funds. This provides exposure to a wide range of underlying geographies and asset-classes. For example, our current portfolio has investments in private equity, emerging market equities, emerging market bonds and arbitrage situations. The over-riding theme is value investing with the potential for event driven outcomes.

While we do hedge some positions, currencies and arbitrage positions the mandate is to maintain net long 100% and utilising prime broker facilities for arbitrage, timing of positions becoming cash or short term trading opportunities.

Job Description

We are looking for a reliable individual to become part of a highly focused team and grow into a role of decision making in the investment process. The role includes trade execution alongside a variety of front-office support functions. As the successful candidate gains experience, they will have the opportunity to analyse potential investments, make recommendations and have discretion over sections of the portfolio. The small size of the firm means that the role is very broad and will include elements of the following:

• Trade execution across a range of financial instruments
• Selection of suitable hedges when necessary
• Managing relationships with the fund's counterparties
• Developing and maintaining systems for screening investment opportunities
• Analysis of P&L, performance attribution and reconciliation
• Analysis and management of risk exposures
• Cash and treasury management

Training will be provided on all of the elements of the role. To accelerate this process and to help the exchange of ideas, we work from our office in Southwark.

Requirements

Candidates will need the following attributes to fulfil the role successfully:

• Attention to detail and the ability to work without error
• Excellent analytical skills
• Highly numerate with top tier academic credentials.
• Strong Excel skills
• Interest in capital markets and an understanding of the workings of financial instruments
• Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing

This opening would suit a candidate currently in an operations role and an interest in moving into the front office, or an individual with front office trading support experience. The successful candidate will either have, or be willing to complete, the Investment Management Certificate and the CFA Program.
