Job Responsibility:
Astex Pharmaceuticals is a world leader in innovative drug discovery and development. The company has successfully applied its proprietary Fragment-Based Drug Discovery platform to generate multiple new drug candidates that are progressing in clinical development. Successful collaborations have led to three launched oncology drugs (Kisqali® partnered with Novartis, Balversa® partnered with Janssen and Truqap™ partnered with AstraZeneca). Astex continues to grow and focuses on Neurological Disorders and Oncology.
The Role
The role will involve the application of structural bioinformatics approaches to all aspects of Astex's drug discovery process. This will include the identification and assessment of potential new targets from a structural perspective and developing new in-house structural bioinformatics tools. It will involve taking data from public domain structural databases and our extensive in-house structure collection and integrating this with proteomics, genomics and biological data resources.
You will be part of a team that includes bioinformaticians, biologists, computational chemists and structural biologists. There will be opportunities for research into novel methods including machine learning based approaches.
The ideal candidate should have a sound knowledge of protein structure and function and be familiar with mining diverse datasets, e.g. PDB, protein sequences, structure prediction, homology, phylogeny and model organism data. You should also have demonstrable programming expertise, excellent communication skills and the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Apply structural bioinformatics for target mining and/or analysis
- Support ongoing drug discovery projects e.g. assessment of potential selectivity issues
- Develop tools for mining & visualising three-dimensional protein structural information & integration with multi-omics biological data
Preferred skills and Experience:
Ph.D. in structural bioinformatics, structural biology, bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science or related discipline
- Experience analysing protein structures and sequences
- Proficiency in Python
- Good understanding of standard statistical methods and their usage
- Excellent team working, written and verbal communication skills
- Experience with machine learning methods would be an advantage, but is not a requirement
