About the role

By way of extensive training, this Trainee Product Line Manager role will work towards the full remit of the Product Line Manager role below:-

Product Line Managers role within the Manufacturing team is to direct and co-ordinate manufacturing flow-lines in achieving manufacturing schedules and meeting the Company's business objectives.

Reporting to the Head of Operations UK in this challenging role, you will lead a team to ensure the manufacture of all products is carried out in an effective and efficient manner to agreed standards and cost restraints, whilst pursuing the company's people development and continuous improvement ethics of Quality, Cost and Delivery.

Operational Management

  • Ensure that all products are manufactured according to customer specifications and are completed and delivered to the customer on time through the efficient use of labour and resources.
  • Effectively manage and monitor cost centre budgets under remit, production activities including stock levels, materials usage and control, waste management and productivity levels.
  • Lead Lean Manufacturing programmes and initiatives including cellular manufacturing processes, Kaizen, Target costing, Kan-ban and process analysis
  • To work closely and co-operate with Quality, R&D and Production Engineering departments, ensuring processes operate at an optimum level and to continuously seek to develop and improve all processes, procedures, operations and methods within area of responsibility
  • Take responsibility for and maintain all Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) activities
  • Manage and maintain the business as required through good understanding of all computer systems within the production areas of the company in order to provide relevant reports to various third parties
  • To ensure staffing levels meet production requirement each working day and that all functions are adequately and appropriately staffed at all times
  • To ensure Manufacturing maintains its quality assurance accreditation through the compliance of the business unit to all quality procedures and company procedures/standards as detailed in company and department manuals or as requested by the Head of Operations UK and by promoting continuous quality improvement at all times
  • To ensure that, in line with agreed budgetary targets, effective resources are in place to meet the demands of the business unit, complying with all relevant policies and procedures
  • Ensure all operative and strategic targets are reached within the business unit, e.g. Productivity, Costs, Process optimisation, on time delivery 95% or higher, scrap rate below 1%, Process Sigma >4.5, RTY >99.89,OEE 82%.

Leadership & People Management

  • Manage, motivate and support Supervisors and Operations employees
  • Effectively work with the HR Department to ensure all staff training and development needs are identified and met through the implementation of the company's performance review process (OFM)
  • Ensure that Company employment relations policies and procedures are implemented at all times. To liaise with Head of Operations UK and HR Department on matters requiring advice and guidance.
  • Day to day management of production staff
  • In conjunction with the HR Department, recruit Production staff to carry out manufacturing operative duties, including Temporary staff via recruitment agencies.
  • Having a pragmatic, hands-on approach with leadership skills; being highly visible at all times

Communication

  • Ensure that effective and regular communication takes place between teams and individuals
  • Hold regular team communication forums and ensure that relevant business information is communicated effectively and cascaded throughout area of responsibility
  • Develop and foster good working relationships with Supervisors, functions, and internal and external customers

Health & Safety

  • Effectively ensure that all health & safety regulations and practices are met and adhered to for the safety of employees
  • Ensure that full co-operation is given to the Health & Safety Manager in relation to risk assessment and accident reporting incidences

General Responsibilities

  • Comply with all health & safety requirements
  • Comply with all other company policies & procedures
  • Take responsibility for personal development, identify training needs and request appropriate training as required
  • Work closely with the Quality Department to deliver appropriate standards in line with company policies
  • Deliver a seamless interface with internal and external customers

Role Requirements

  • Education/Qualifications
  • Working towards Certificate in Operations Management or Certificate in Management Studies
  • Lean / Sigma Black Belt or significant practical deployment of lean manufacturing techniques, process improvements and pro-active quality management

Related Experience

  • Must have an understanding of the requirements of lean manufacturing management
  • Skills, Special Competencies
  • Be prepared to train towards the following skill and competencies:
  • Familiarity and practical experience of lean manufacturing production techniques, process improvements and pro-active quality management
  • Working to ISO9001 / 18.000.1 standards.
  • Understanding of the links between Supply Chain and Manufacturing
  • Driven by targets and have a strong commitment to quality output
  • Strong people management skills, with ability to focus and drive staff to achieve results in a pressurised environment to strict deadlines.
  • Self- motivated and confident when taking responsibility for all areas of work
  • Sound decision making and problem solving skills
  • Project management Skills in an international environment
  • Excellent analytical skills in order to monitor and manage KPI's
  • Good IT, written and verbal communication skills
  • A team player with excellent motivational leadership skills
  • Have the drive and desire to drive forward improvements
