The Pathology IT Manager is responsible for managing and coordinating all aspects of IT (support, installations & and project implementations) for the Pathology at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals Trust to include Biochemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Microbiology, Cellular Pathology and the Mortuary. This comprises the development, installation and support of new and existing systems, providing training and documentation and a point of contact between the Trust, Suppliers and Stakeholders. The Pathology IT Manager is responsible for managing and coordinating all aspects of IT (support, installations & and project implementations) for the Pathology at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals Trust to include Biochemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Microbiology, Cellular Pathology and the Mortuary. This comprises the development, installation and support of new and existing systems, providing training and documentation and a point of contact between the Trust, Suppliers and Stakeholders. The post holder is responsible for all hardware and software in the laboratories as well as LIMS, CyberLab and integrity of data held. The post holder will be expected to liaise with Lancashire and South Cumbria Pathology Collaboration with anticipated new LIMS project. Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is situated on the west coast of Lancashire, and offers a full range of district hospital services and community health services to a population of 1.6 million in Lancashire and South Cumbria. The Pathology Directorate encompassed several disciplines: Anti-Coagulation Dosing Advisory Service, Biochemistry, Blood Transfusion, Cellular Pathology, Haematology, Microbiology, Mortuary, Point of Care Testing, Phlebotomy & Virology. The department has approximately 280 staff comprised of Consultants, Biomedical Scientists, Medical Laboratory Assistants, other laboratory or technical personnel and administration staff.
  • To undertake and manage new IT projects as and when required within the labs. This will entail discussions with suppliers, users, providing documentation, installation, and configuration and testing until such point that the project has either gone live or can be safely handed over to other stakeholders.
  • Responsibility for all hardware and software within the laboratories, the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and Ordercomms, the integrity of the data it holds and the effective and accurate distribution of that data to clinicians and other systems as appropriate, across the Trust and to the local health community.
  • To provide fault finding investigation in all systems; (desktop, hardware, software, network, connectivity): take ownership of highly complex faults to resolution and to liaise with hospital IT services and other parties should they be required to resolve the issues and co-ordinate support.
  • Installations & fault finding work undertaken in both offices and contaminated lab areas.
  • Proactive management of systems to provide on going improvement of service offered by the labs.
  • Be responsible for solving of highly complex problems regarding programming and interface issues that arise between the analytical platforms and the Laboratory Information System. This may involve the safe and expeditious retrieval of erroneous results before they are available to clinical staff.
  • To provide documentation of systems installed, user instruction documentation and report logging.
  • To ensure that all new or upgrades to clinical systems function correctly and have been tested before going live.
  • To ensure that departmental workload data is available as and when required by Pathology Services Manager.
  • To contribute the Pathology Directorate meetings on all IT matters and projects, communicating highly complex issues and resolutions
to scientific and medical staff in the Directorate.
  • Line manager for the Pathology IT Admin Support.
  • Provide training and support for Pathology IT Admin Support.
  • Responsible for training of staff at all grades in the Directorate, from basic system use to highly complex interfacing and problem solving.
  • To communicate effectively with all levels of staff on multifaceted issues relating to IT systems.
  • To ensure that daily pro-active management and regular housekeeping tasks are undertaken to maintain system integrity and that these are documented appropriately in order to keep patient and their information safe.
