About The Role

Role overview:

Portering Services provides essential support to all areas of the hospital. The porter will be expected to react to the various challenges within the working environment, and the workload may be increased due to external influences including the environment, weather, patient capacity etc.

The porter will work as part of a team contributing to the smooth running of the service, providing an efficient and effective response to requests for patient movement, assistance in emergency situations, collection and delivery of samples and medicines etc, whilst ensuring that other tasks such as delivery of meal trolleys, linen, goods and mail etc are carried out in a timely manner.

Whilst many of the tasks are generally routine the daily functioning of the service may be unpredictable therefore a flexible approach is essential, and the post holder will be expected to use own initiative.

You will be working Monday to Sunday, 06:00 to 22:00, 37.5 hours per week, on a permanent, full-time basis.

Key tasks & responsibilities:

  • To transfer patients in a safe and appropriate manner to and from the wards, theatres and departments via means of walking, wheelchair, stretcher, bed.
  • Conveyance of patient notes and x-rays to and from wards/departments, as requested.
  • To replace medical gasses where necessary.
  • Remove equipment from wards/departments as required.
  • Removal of clinical and nonclinical waste and laundry from all areas as required.
  • To accept linen deliveries, check and store correctly in designated areas. Prepare linen trolleys for delivery to all areas as per agreed stock levels.
  • Ensure correct records are maintained. Assist in transporting trolleys to and from wards and departments. Offload in the correct area with the correct amounts of linen.
  • Assist in the transporting of catering trolleys to and from wards.
  • Change curtains on wards and departments as requested by the Domestic Support Manager or Supervisors.
  • Attend team meetings as required and suggest improvements to working practices.
  • Cleaning duties as required.
  • Any other reasonably requested duties by the Domestic Services Manager.
  • Participate in any communication activities through formal and informal channels on safety matters to ensure that there is a free flow of ideas.
  • Ensure that the OCS safety image is reflected positively through your actions.
  • Ensure that you have received the necessary training so that you can competently carry out your duties and responsibilities. Acknowledge and accept a personal responsibility for safety.
  • Take responsibility for reviewing the safe system of work prior to the commencement of the work activity.
  • Take responsibility for ensuring that plant and equipment is maintained and fit for purpose.
  • Raise any concerns over Health & Safety breaches in accordance with Company Procedure.
  • Group Safety Support: You will be required to work closely with the Group Health and Safety team who are available to provide safety advice and support. Furthermore, you will be required to ensure that safety initiatives are implemented within your areas of control.

  • Medical gas safety experience
