The Role and Department

The Directorate brings together pan-institution specialist student support services within the Colleges and Wider Student Experience Division and incorporates the Student Support and Wellbeing Office, Counselling and Mental Health Service, the Disability Support Service and the Student Conduct Office.

The Student Support and Wellbeing Office seek to recruit a Public Health Advanced Practitioner who will be responsible for key elements of the University's Health and Wellbeing Strategy. This will be delivered through effective collaborative working with University students and staff, plus wider stakeholders including the local authority, local NHS providers, the third sector and independent/private sector. Through consultation, collaboration, coproduction, developing, implementing, monitoring and leading key public health programmes across the University, the post holder will help us reduce health inequalities and improve health and wellbeing for our students [and staff].

The postholder will play a key role in forging partnerships with, and influencing all key stakeholders, including public health commissioners and providers, to ensure the widest possible participation in the public health agenda to support the development and delivery of strategic objectives. The post holder will report performance and progress to the Head of Student Support and Wellbeing and governance committees within Durham University.

The post holder will also benefit from a partnership agreement with Durham County Council's Public Health Team who will provide professional mentorship for the role and identify relevant training opportunities. This will also help to ensure our excellent working relationship between the two organisations is maintained and further strengthened.

The post holder will be responsible for the following public health programmes:

Supporting the delivery, evaluation and evolution of Durham University's Health and Wellbeing Strategy, specifically to:

  • investigate and advise on evidence-based, sector-leading best practice in student health and wellbeing;
  • contribute to the development of the student mental health agenda across the University including:

o implementation of our Suicide Prevention Strategy and subsequent review;

o leading on our work towards the University Mental Health Charter;

o support the ongoing delivery of mental health training for staff and students in partnership with the Counselling Service;

o facilitate a greater understanding of the causes of mental health difficulty amongst the student body and identify appropriate actions in response.

  • develop and implement a new University Drugs Policy and associated education and awareness programme for students;
  • refresh the Student Alcohol Awareness and Use Policy;
  • ensure University health protection processes are fit for purpose, updating where necessary;
  • enable co-produced initiatives and campaigns in particular areas of need highlighted by our Health Needs Assessments such as alcohol and substance use, lack of sleep, sexual health, stress, and healthy eating;
  • explore the delivery of accessible health and well-being services for students on campus including vaccination clinics, sexual health services, drug and alcohol advice service, and GP provision;
  • identify opportunities to report and publicise the work of the University around health and wellbeing;
  • update and develop the University's Health Needs Assessments.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Master's degree in Public Health, Health Promotion or a related field (or working towards MPH)
  • A relevant degree, supplemented by Public Health improvement knowledge, acquired through training, courses and experience.
  • Professional Public Health practitioner with a proven track record of adapting and applying public health skills, knowledge and competencies to all priorities as well as being able to apply the evidence base in a range of public health programmes and settings
  • Experience of providing specialist Public Health advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues, including more senior colleagues.
  • Proven track record of partnership working with a wide range of statutory, voluntary and academic agencies
  • Have an excellent track record of implementation and evaluation of public health and health improvement programmes in a range of settings and with a range of provider.
  • Experience in the use of health protection measures and in supporting the management of outbreaks

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge
