As part of the ISIS Design Division, the Mechatronics team specify, design, and deliver moving equipment and systems to meet the requirements of our scientists. This involves the application of a broad range of engineering expertise including mechanical, electrical, safety, and control in collaboration with mechanical, electrical, and project design and operational teams.

These systems are broad in scope from miniature stepper driven linear axes to complex synchronised servo systems, pneumatically driven stages, and industrial robots. They typically require high levels of precision and repeatability, in challenging environments - whether that's vacuum, magnetic fields, or radiation, and often have access requirements that are challenging for functional safety.

We have both Mechatronics Engineer and Senior Mechatronics Engineer positions available in the team.

Person Specification

For the Mechatronics Engineer the below will be review at either Shortlisting (S) and/or Interview (I) stage:

  • MEng, MSc, BEng degree or equivalent in a highly relevant engineering discipline or an HNC/HND with extensive additional project work experience (S&I)
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of applying at least one of the following relevant areas of engineering on machine/mechatronics designs (S&I) :
    • Mechanical (i.e. design and specification of mechanical/motion elements)
    • Electrical (i.e. panel design to BS EN ISO 60204)
    • Safety (i.e. design of functionally safe systems to ISO 12100, IEC 62061/ISO 13849, etc.)
    • Control (i.e. motion PLC programming to IEC 61131)
  • Good interpersonal skills, and experience working in multi-disciplinary project teams - communicating, reviewing and being reviewed, with a growth mindset for continuous improvement. (S&I)
  • Experience of either directly or indirectly managing staff (S&I)

For the Senior Mechatronics Engineer (in addition to the above) the below will also be reviewed against:

  • Demonstrable and extensive knowledge and experience of applying two or more relevant areas of engineering detailed above (mechanical, electrical, safety, control) on mechatronics projects and an expert in at least one area. (S&I)
  • Experience of managing staff, giving technical supervision and mentoring of junior engineers. (S&I)

Please note: Training in our specific CAD/PLC packages will be provided (Solid Edge + Teamcenter, AutoCAD Electrical + Vault, TwinCAT 3 etc.)
