About the Role

You will work closely with the Head of Audit and Risk Management and the senior management team within the Council's Audit and Risk Management service to deliver the Council's goals by partnering with services across the Council to realise effective risk management, acting as a strategic advisor to protect the Council from exposure to losses and / or missed opportunities. The role requires the postholder to develop and embed a corporate risk management methodology for the organisation and to ensure their strategic use across all areas of the Council. As part of the legal requirements, to demonstrate effective governance, to be responsible for the Risk Management framework of the Council and ensure that the framework and risk management process are adhered to at the top levels of the organisation by the Leadership Group, Assistant Directors, and Directors. The role will interface with key stakeholders, in particular the Performance Management, Programme Management, Governance (Legal), Finance, Internal Audit, Directorate Management and Corporate Management teams, the Audit Committee and ensure adherence to their obligations and corporate standards. The post holder will be expected to be the Council expert and provide ultimate guidance in relation to Corporate Risk Management. Reporting directly to the Head of Audit and Risk Management your focus will be on driving risk management practice and reporting risks to support the Council achieve its goals. Occasionally, the role will require the candidate to represent the service at Audit Committee, in internal and external meetings and conferences.

About the Team

You will be part of a small friendly close-knit team of professionals, where we all support each other, with extensive experience of working for local authorities. The Audit and Risk Management service comprises of the internal audit, counter fraud, insurance and risk management teams. This small team has a very high profile in the organisation and pro-actively engages with all departments in the Council.

About You

The successful candidate will have existing management experience and proven track record of working with the senior leadership team. You will have the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of stakeholders, both written and verbally, an interest in working in a fast-paced environment, often balancing multiple high priority deliverables, the ability to work independently in a self-directed way in a collaborative, team-oriented environment and good attention to detail and ability to provide information in usable formats. Ideally with risk management qualifications or equivalent, you will have experience in communicating clearly, confidently, and empathetically across a wide range of groups including officers, insurers, elected members, senior leaders, and other stakeholders. The role requires the candidate to have great leadership and excellent business writing skills with the ability to engage with senior management and external stakeholders. You will have full knowledge of relevant legislation relating to the risk management practice within local authorities or the wider the public sector. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong written and analytic skills, a keen eye for detail, be a good listener and use their initiative to resolve issues in a professional manner as well as experience and knowledge on motivating employees and promoting a collaborative working culture.
