Risk & Underwriting Manager

We're looking for a brilliant Risk & Underwriting Manager to join our team of colleagues in British Gas Business, that together are setting the standard in energy supply.

The role

The role is to lead the Credit Assessment Team in British Gas Business (BGB). The role holder is responsible for working Collaboratively with our Sales & Debt teams to protect BGB from any bad debt which may be incurred from businesses defaulting their payments.

The team you will manage mitigates risk by underwriting energy supply applications, considering all relevant quantitative and qualitative information available relating to the customer's financial position. Once all information has been reviewed by automated or manual process, a decision will be taken to reject or accept a supply application within policy guidelines. The role will require the individual to ensure the team are trained to the requisite standard to deliver the above, and the policies which they use inform outcomes minimises debt risk whilst delivering the maximum number of sales possible.

It is the functions responsibility to mitigate any operational risks that may impact the businesses commercial, or regulatory position. As well as proactively resolving issues which may impact our customers experience of our supply services before they become aware of them. You will be expected to work with the wider business to improve process and training for various teams.

Key Accountabilities:

  • To ensure all team members are competent and capable to underwrite energy applications to the required data quality and compliance standards.
  • Respond to any queries from internal teams which relate to the process or decisions the team have made in a timely fashion.
  • Work with third party suppliers to ensure decisioning tools are working to the required standard and any opportunities those suppliers may present to minimise credit risk are reviewed effectively.
  • Review all high value applications decisions over £500,000 and work with Group Risk where required to minimise risk to Centrica group.
  • Liaise with Sales to request further information from customers where required to adequately assess the credit risk.
  • To take into consideration external market factors within the decision-making process.
  • Deal with escalations for sales leadership & be able to explain the rationale for decisions to internal stakeholders clearly and concisely.

Skills and Experience

  • An accounting qualification is desirable.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • A leader in interpreting financial data.
  • Excellent communication, influencing and negotiation skills.
  • Strong relationship management skills.
  • Works well in a team and with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to prioritise effectively.
  • Excel and SAP knowledge preferable.
