We are pleased to offer a unique opportunity for a Student Environmental Health Officer to join the Food, Safety and Public Health Team. This is the chance to embrace the challenge of training in a busy front line public health service in an expanding city with a diverse range of businesses and public health challenges.

You'll hold relevant GCSE's (or equivalent), A Level's (or equivalent) and preferably an undergraduate degree in a science-based discipline. The successful candidate will have some experience of Health and Safety regulation, Food Safety, Infectious Disease Control or other areas of Environmental Health.

The successful applicant will be embedded in a diverse and experienced team while also completing a full time (over 1 year) or part time (over 2 years) masters in Environmental Health at the University of West England in Bristol. The successful candidate will have the course costs paid for as part of the job role and will be supported to qualify as an EHO throughout the period of the contract.

You can expect to train, learn from and support officers undertaking the whole breadth of Environmental Health functions including: food safety inspections, food sampling, health and safety regulation, permitting of industrial processes, private water supplies, port health, infectious disease, special procedures and sports ground safety. Opportunities to support and gain experience in housing and environmental protection teams will also be available through the contract.

Role Location: Officers in the team can work from the Civic Centre at the heart of Newport and can operate in a hybrid agile manner including working from home. However, there is an expectation and need to visit businesses, domestic properties, vessels and other locations across the City as and when needed; including into evenings and on weekends as service demands dictate. A driving license or other means of being able to travel and undertaken site visits across the city, and to the university campus in Bristol will be needed as part of the role.

Employment Benefits: Generous Annual Leave entitlement, Local Government Pension Scheme, LGPS AVC Scheme, Flexible and Agile working policies, Personal development opportunities; Active Travel routes into the city and Bike-to-Work scheme, VECTIS/My Rewards Employee benefits.

Face to Face Interviews will occur in April 2025 with the intention for the successful candidate to start as soon as possible thereafter. The university course will commence in September 2025. For an informal conversation and more detail about the role, the entry requirements or the relevance of an undergraduate degree you hold, please contact Rhys Thomas, Food, Safety & Public Health Manager on 01633 839861.
