Job Responsibility:

The IWC Secretariat is seeking candidates for the position of Modelling and Statistics Officer to support the Lead for Modelling and Statistics with programming, compilation, management, visualisations and analysis of input data. The Officer will collaborate across the Science, Conservation and Management team, with other Secretariat staff and with external researchers and organisations.

The successful applicant will excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders in a politically sensitive environment. The postholder will have demonstrable professional experience in statistics or computer science and have excellent numerical and analytical skills. Fluent in English and competence in another working language of the Commission (French or Spanish) would be advantageous.

This post is advertised as a Full-Time position (37.5 hours per week) for a fixed-term until 31 December 2026. You will be based at the IWC Secretariat Headquarters in Impington, Cambridge, UK. Overseas applications are encouraged, and the Secretariat will support the successful candidate in obtaining a UK work visa where necessary. Any costs incurred in moving to the UK would be the responsibility of the employee, but some relocation reimbursement may be available.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

  • Support the programming and implementation of cetacean population models within the Secretariat, working with and supporting the needs of the Scientific Committee.
  • Assist in the compilation, management and analysis of data and related documentation.
  • Work with other members of the Secretariat to ensure statistical information on the IWC website is correctly validated, documented and up-to-date.
  • Write or contribute to other reports, in particular assist in the drafting and review of the Scientific and Conservation Committees' reports.
  • Respond to requests for, and questions concerning, IWC data including production of high level summaries for the Commission, relevant external organisations and public consumption. Ensuring compliance with data protection policies.
  • Collate, check and document abundance estimates and information on status of stocks as agreed by the Scientific Committee.

Person Specification

· University degree in numerical subject e.g., mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, computer science or physics, and / or postgraduate qualification demonstrating comparable quantitative skills.

· Excellent numerical skills, experience with a range of analytical methods and robust data management approaches.

· Ability to work within a team to develop and implement collaborative approaches to shared challenges.

· Ability to build effective working relationships with a range of stakeholders and experience of operating in politically sensitive environments.

· Good spoken and written English, comfortable rapporteuring technical discussions and communicating with non-technical internal and external stakeholders.

· Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work on multiple concurrent projects, recognise and respond to shifting priorities, and handle different types of information.

· Meticulous with excellent attention to detail to ensure high quality outputs.

· Knowledge of version control, proper documentation and repository management.

· Knowledge of the R statistical language.

· Ability to write simple, well-documented code.

· Database management experience, including data verification, validation and retrieval.

· Experience of using SQL in data management.

· Awareness of data protection legislation and data security protocols/practices.
