At the heart of that transformation journey is the National Health and Safety Team, in which this critical role will be embedded. The Director of Safety Risk will lead the development and delivery of our health and safety risk strategy for Royal Mail with a priority emphasis on the property portfolio. To drive improvements at all stages of the property lifecycle. This is a pivotal role in our organisation and ensures that we operate within our established risk appetite, including providing a safe and legal estate, this includes the setting and monitoring of key performance targets. This role is accountable for ensuring an appropriate governance framework is established for Health, Safety & Environment, Compliance Management and Risk, Governance & Assurance. Liaising with Group Legal on forthcoming changes to legislation.

To ensure alignment with other business strategies across the Group and to act as a force for change to lead and oversee the implementation of innovative solutions through engagement and partnerships both internally and externally.

To influence and build relationships with peers and senior teams across the wider business, in particular Risk & teams, Sustainability functions, Legal and Internal Audit to achieve desired objectives, ensure the appropriate management of risk and support high quality service delivery.

A critical member of the Health and Safety Leadership Team, supporting the development and delivery of all aspects of Health and safety priority areas. A key contributor to property's strategic plans, influencing capital and revenue budgetary decision making as part of the annual planning cycle.

You will be accountable at owning the key and senior stakeholder relationships across the Property and Business Unit leadership structure.

You will also lead and provide the delivery of Risk Strategy, Implementation and Assurance plans, whilst also leading the Compliance, Governance and Risk Management within Property and being responsible for overseeing compliance with appropriate standards, policies, regulations and the identification and management of risk, within agreed frameworks.

Reporting into the Group Health and Safety Director You will directly lead a team of 10.

About You

To truly excel in this role, you'll possess, and be able to evidence, the skills and experience listed below:

Key Skills

  • Leader with 5+ years relevant experience working at a senior level in a commercially focused environment - ideally in a Real Estate or Corporate business or organisation with highly complex planning and stakeholder landscapes.
  • Degree or equivalent experience in a Safety discipline such as NEBOSH Diploma, BSc, MSc
  • Degree or equivalent experience in Risk Management such IRM Diploma, BSc, MSc
  • Industry recognition for competence and leadership such as graduate membership or Chartership of IOSH/ IRM, or other relevant professional body
  • Creative and innovative with experience of championing diversity, inclusion and co-operation
  • Strong commercial acumen with a track record of demonstrating commercial benefits through risk-based decision making in relation to safety or compliance.
  • Experience of operating at a strategic level in large diverse commercial organisations, providing clarity of direction for others to follow.
  • Excellent leadership, management, relationship management, planning, presentation and influencing skills, with experience in governance oversight.
  • Extensive experience and understanding of incident management in relation to health and safety or business continuity.
  • In-depth knowledge of the UK regulatory and policy frameworks e.g. health and safety, compliance, enterprise risk.
  • Experience in balancing & managing multiple internal stakeholders at a senior level in the development and execution of complex plans or programmes.
  • Ability to manage the conflicting expectations and priorities of diverse stakeholder groups over short, medium and long term.
  • Understanding of the principals and frameworks for successful Planning, Project and Programme Management
  • Understanding of project delivery within a fast-paced business environment with the ability to cope under pressure.
  • Demonstrated capability for problem solving, decision making, sound judgement and assertiveness.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret data.
  • Able to communicate, engage and energise at senior level across the business, excellent oral and written communication skills as well as excellent presentations skills.
  • Strong IT aptitude shown through use of excel, project management software or other standard products.
