Primary Purpose of the Role:

Thales teams deliver cutting-edge solutions to armed forces the world over. We are Europe's number one supplier of defence electronics and a leading provider of integrated air defence systems. The Trials & Environmental Test Department performs many activities related to testing and performance monitoring of the various defence projects. These activities include test and trial planning and analysis, development and qualification test and trials, missile acceptance processing and in-service support for UK MOD and overseas customers' trials.

The Environmental Test Team Manager is a practical role working as part of the Environmental Test team with work package and people management responsibilities, reporting to the Head of Trials and Environmental Test. It is a varied and rewarding role that requires commitment and a willingness to travel.

Responsibility:

The Environmental Test Team Manager must be technically competent to carry out tasks associated with any project undertaken by the Environmental Test Department.

The Team Manager will:

  • Assume line management responsibility for the Environmental Test Team in accordance with Thales UK policy and procedure.

  • Carry out strategic planning for maintaining and improving the department's skills and equipment capability.

  • Mentor and coach team members, focusing on development actions identified during strategic planning and personal development discussions.

  • Liaise with project teams and the Head of Trials and Environmental Test to assess and help manage the department's commitments to existing and future projects.

  • Liaise with future business and other engineering departments to acquire any necessary technical information and determine hardware availability for planned tests and trials.

  • Organise Environmental Test activities within the UK and overseas.

  • Work with the Trials and Environmental Test managers on larger projects, managing individual packages of work.

  • Attend project meetings within the company and with outside agencies and customers.

  • Plan and document test activities.

  • Assess records after a test or trial to determine its relative success before proceeding to the next stage.

  • Co-ordinate movements, transport, accommodation etc. of test engineers and works personnel.

  • Administer company personnel during testing to ensure that safety procedures are strictly adhered to.

  • Support test activities either as a team leader, team member or autonomously.

  • Prepare and operate ground instrumentation equipment as specified for a test or trial.

  • Carry out testing of missiles or missile systems in preparation for ground or flight trials.

  • Provide customer support.

  • Work with other Thales departments and suppliers to design, manufacture and prepare special purpose test hardware.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Minimum 2:2 Honours degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or an HNC or equivalent in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering plus relevant experience executing the responsibilities listed above.

  • Full driving license

Experience:

Essential:

  • Carrying out design, assembly, test and operation of electrical / mechanical components.

  • Specifying and putting to work analogue and digital instrumentation within a manufacturing environment.

  • Demonstrable knowledge of, and experience using, data analysis methods and practical process.

  • Engineering report and procedure writing and review.

  • Work package management within the defence product test environment.

Desirable:

  • Team leadership

  • Ability to manage and support team members providing technical and managerial support as well as coaching and mentoring their career development.

  • Membership of a professional body

Personal Attributes:

  • Demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills and be keen and willing to develop the skills necessary to lead and manage multifunctional teams.

Additional Information

The successful applicant will be required to work overtime, often at short notice, and agreed working patterns to comply with capacity demands. This job will also require substantial business travel, sometimes at short notice and for durations of up to 4 weeks at a time.
