The Department of Politics is looking for an enthusiastic post-doctoral research fellow to join the Surrey Team at a full-time capacity. This post is to cover for a fixed term (August 2024 - December 2025), specific roles and responsibilities in the Department of Politics, reporting to Prof. Amelia Hadfield (HoD) and Prof. Theofanis Exadaktylos.
The role
The post holder is expected to;
- Contribute to research activities of the REDEMOS project: “Reconfiguring EU Democracy Support. Towards a Sustained Demos in the EU's Eastern Neighbourhood” co-funded by Horizon Europe and UKRI, as part of the research team at the University of Surrey
- Participate in Departmental life through management and administration of the research project activities. Support will be provided as a form of induction by the Deputy Head of Department (Prof. Exadaktylos). More information on the project can be found here: https://redemos.eu/about-us/overview/
- Contribute to the research activities of the project not only involving the team at Surrey but also collaboratively in different work-packages where Surrey is involved:
- Data collection (desk-based)
- Interviews and application of Q-methodology
- Survey research
- Ethnographic/participant observations
- Focus groups and mini publics
- Complement our existing research themes and the research framework of REDEMOS and have the potential to collaborate with colleagues, particularly in the areas of:
- European integration
- Democracy promotions
- Good governance and public policy
- Eastern neighbourhood policy
- Regional expertise: Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia
The post holder will be expected to develop their own research agenda alongside the activities of the project, and they would be welcome to use the project's resources for their own professional development. They will also receive mentoring and coaching on career development and progression and benefit from the resources of the University that all staff enjoy.

About you
- PhD, completed (or verifiably close to completion) in Politics, International Relations or related discipline
- Experience of collaborative research projects
- Experience of fieldwork and specific research methods application
- Specialism in European Politics / International Relations / Foreign policy / Democratisation / Regional expertise / European Union external relations

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£34,980) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate. Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£36,024).
