Job Title: DRAMA GRADUATE
Fixed Term - 1 September 2024 to 30 June 2025
Location: Sherborne School
Reporting to: Director of Drama
Hours of Work: Will average 37.5 hours per week during term time. However, flexibility in hours of work will be required to meet the demands of the post, including evening and weekend working during production weeks.
Salary: £16,891.88 per annum, Salaries are paid monthly in arrears direct into nominated bank account and will usually be reviewed annually in September.
Holidays: You will be able to take all School Holidays as holiday. Will be required to attend INSET and Department training that takes place out of term time. Attendance may be required on Bank Holidays that fall during term time. Holiday cannot be taken during Sherborne School term time.
Accommodation: The post holder will be required to live in for the better performance of their duties and will receive free accommodation and utilities (one bedroom)
Pension: The post-holder will be able to join the Sherborne School Support Staff Pension Scheme on the first day of the month after completion of two months service. Where eligible the post-holder will be auto-enrolled into the Pension Scheme as per current legislation; further details may be obtained from the Head of Human Resources (Bursary).
Main Purpose:
The Drama Graduate will assist the Director of Drama in delivering the co-curricular programme as well as assisting in academic drama lessons. This will include directing, co-directing and producing school productions, assisting with the Drama scholars' programme, and supporting House plays and other shows. This is an excellent opportunity for an innovative, passionate and highly creative practitioner to work in a department with a strong culture and tradition of the theatrical arts, working to develop the performance and technical skills of a talented group of young people, and galvanising them towards holding a lifelong love of theatre, presentation and performance.
Duties - this is not intended to be a comprehensive list of the tasks that will be covered and other tasks will be undertaken at the direction of the Director of Drama.
Academic Drama
- Provide additional support and supervision in school time and some evenings for Junior School, GCSE and A Level Drama rehearsals
- Provide theatre practitioner workshops for GCSE students and Scholars to develop their knowledge and theatrical skills
- Provide practical drama cover for lessons when a member of staff is absent
- Accompany theatre visits
- Attend departmental meetings on a regular basis, as required.
Co-curricular Drama
- Assist Drama Scholars and other pupils/staff to successfully direct House Drama pieces
- Direct at least one school production per year
- Act as Assistant Director and Co-Producer on school productions
- Assist with the teaching of LAMDA lessons as required
- Assist with the scheduling of LAMDA lessons, examination entries, billing and other matters relating to LAMDA provision
- Carry out any other reasonable requests in line with the broad responsibilities of the role.
Additional Opportunities
A range of additional opportunities may be available to the Drama Graduate, depending on their interests and aptitudes. These could include some of the following:
- Run a playwriting group;
- Develop comedy and cabaret through creating a Comedy Society;
- Develop a Musical Theatre group;
- Set up joint school projects with our sister school, Sherborne Girls.
Person Specification
The successful candidate will have:
- Actor training and/or Drama at degree level and/or Drama in an educational setting and/or professional experience as actor/director/practitioner
- An extensive knowledge of theatrical history
- An extensive knowledge of, and passion for, contemporary world theatre
- Knowledge of the LAMDA qualifications or similar
- Experience of working with young people
- Experience of directing a range of productions
- Strong communication skills
- Energy and resilience.
The Drama Graduate:
- Must comply with School policies and procedures.
- Have an awareness of and display commitment to the relevant legislation and guidance in working practices in relation to the safeguarding of children and young people.
- Will be required to attend training sessions arranged by the School.
