Job Description
As part of our continued growth and long-term strategic ambitions, we are seeking an accountable, responsible, and people-oriented leader to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in leading roles within an operations environment, particularly within the waste management sector. The successful candidate will lead our Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) team in Desford, ensuring operational efficiency and compliance. A key aspect of this role is to foster employee engagement and drive continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the material processing team at our Desford MRF, focusing on maximizing recycling rates for commodities including cardboard, paper grades, and plastics.
- Drive best value and quality of materials processed, implementing a leadership style that promotes best practice efficiency from people, plant, and process.
- Ensure the line management of onsite personnel, overseeing:
- Health, Safety & Environmental compliance
- Material acceptance
- Segregation
- Sorting
- Receiving and loading out all commodities with zero non-contamination
- Sales of product
- Standardization
- Production
- Optimize operational efficiency and productivity through effective utilization of plant and machinery.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance site performance.
- Develop and maintain key performance indicators (KPIs) and ensure their achievement.
- Demonstrate strong leadership and management skills to motivate and guide the team.
- Collaborate with other departments to streamline processes and achieve company-wide objectives.
- Take ownership of improving depot efficiency.
- Implement and enforce Health & Safety procedures, ensuring outputs meet quality specifications to achieve best value.
- Participate in internal Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) audits and promptly address any actions required.
- Monitor and report on performance and non-conformances.
- Ensure team morale remains high and that staff are adequately trained for their roles.
- Manage plant downtime effectively.
- Review and update risk assessments and standard working procedures as necessary.
- Conduct daily material composition analysis and highlight areas of concern.
- Promote good housekeeping principles and conduct regular audits.
- Compile accurate reports on plant availability, production, and recovery.
- Oversee the daily operations of the site and plant, ensuring safe, compliant, and budget-conscious management.

Experience
- Minimum of 3 years in a similar role, preferably in recycling, waste management, or process plants.
- Proficient in business software and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and database applications.
- Knowledge of operating heavy mobile plant equipment, including telehandlers, balers, forklifts, and trucks.
Qualifications
- Essential: IOSH certification, Minimum GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
- Desired: A-Levels/Degree, NEBOSH, COTC - Level 4, Lean Six Sigma - Green Belt.
