The Role & Key Responsibilities
Scrolling for a new opportunity? An exciting and rewarding role that will stretch your skills and mean you'll make a real difference from day one? Look no further.
We are recruiting for a communications officer to join our busy department working across both the news & media and strategic communications functions - giving you the chance to flex your comms skills across two disciplines in helping to fight crime and protect people across Surrey.
In the strategic communications rotation you might be developing and implementing a communications strategy to tackle anything from burglary to Violence Against Women and Girls, joining police officers on attachment to gather social media content, or influencing behaviour change with an internal campaign. On the newsdesk, you'll be the first port of call for regional and national journalists, drafting appeals, or leading the way with proactive print and broadcast media opportunities.
Your day-to-day role could also include incident response, supporting events, and working closely with the engagement function within the department.
You will always have support, but will need the drive to work autonomously in a fast-paced environment to deliver high quality communications and tactical advise to senior officers.
Whatever you are doing we can promise variety and a front-row seat to policing with an award-winning team of innovative and creative communicators that will help you grow and develop new skills and nurture your existing ones.
You'll regularly work with operational colleagues across Surrey Police, as well as other police forces and external agencies to complement our campaign development and implementation, giving you broad career building experience. You will need to have previous experience in a communications role - either in internal or external campaigns, media, or both - and can use your skills to create wide-ranging internal and external content that engages the target audience and encourages behaviour change. You'll be able to accurately identify risks and opportunities, think creatively about what to do next, and respond to real time issues and trends that impact Surrey Police and our people.
As a department we are proud of producing high quality work, and always challenging ourselves to be better using data and evaluation to inform our approach as a department, so we'd love to hear from anyone with experience in reporting and metrics. Previous experience in policing or the public sector would be great, but we are just as interested in hearing from you if you have used your comms skills elsewhere.
You'll be part of a team that prides itself on developing talent in-house, with a range of training and learning opportunities available by making the most of expert knowledge within the team, as well as through external training. Surrey Police is proud to be part of The Association of Police Communicators, helping to grow your network and skills even further.
The strategic communications and news & media teams sit within the Corporate Communications & Engagement department, alongside the engagement and production teams and working closely with a collaborated change communications hub across Surrey Police and Sussex Police. You will be reporting to a Communications Manager, who manages your tasks and is there to support you.
While the role will be based at Surrey Police HQ in Guildford, we support hybrid working and you will therefore be able to spend time working from the office (your contractual working location), working from your local police sites and from home.
Skills & Experience
Degree level qualification/equivalent professional experience in a relevant communications discipline or vocational or post-graduate communications qualification, such as CIM, CIPR or MRS
Experience of delivery of end-to-end integrated internal/change/public information or behavioural communications across multiple channels using tools to assist with audience segmentation
Experience of media relations and/or in managing media enquiries. Knowledge of media law would assist in this role
Evidence of using innovative techniques to target identified audiences and convert communications objectives into tangible outcomes Excellent communications and interpersonal skills, with experience of stakeholder management including liaising and advising people at a senior level and from a range of backgrounds - Strong writing skills and ability to adapt content for different audiences and channels, with attention to detail
Ability to operate autonomously and problem solve at a tactical level
Ability to balance and manage conflict between short and long term priorities and reactive/proactive work under pressure
- Understanding and experience of using social media channels in a work environment to build awareness, understanding and confidence.
Why Work With Us?

- generous annual leave allowance
- discounts for everyday spend
- on-site gyms and a range of sports clubs
