About us

The UCL Cancer Institute is the hub for cancer research at University College London, one of the World's leading universities.

Diamond-Blackfan Anaemia (DBA) is a rare inherited disorder usually diagnosed in the first year of life caused by mutation or loss of a ribosomal protein gene. The disease is characterised by defective blood production and a range of congenital anomalies. DBA patients also have a predisposition to develop a range of cancers. Treatment options are currently limited for DBA patients.

The Payne Lab has developed an rps19-deficient zebrafish model of DBA and have validated the amino acid L-Leucine as a potential therapeutic. This exciting project will use ribsome footprinting to define the mechanism of action of L-Leucine in our zebrafish model.

This post is part of a Great Ormand Street Hospital funded project and is funded for 6 months until 31/03/2025 in the first instance.

About the role

The main purpose of this job is to genotype and collect tissue from zebrafish embryos and isolate the mRNA, as well as refining the protocol and preparing samples for ribosome footprinting.

The postholder will be required to assist with analysis and interpretation of ribosome footprinting results and maintain zebrafish stocks required for the project, as well as collecting and analysing metabolomic data.

The ability to organise and prioritise work, using own initiative as well as having precise note keeping is essential.

Experience of working with zebrafish, or knowledge of RNAseq, or other Omics techniques would be desirable.
