We have an exciting opportunity for a Director of Research Services to join our Professional Services leadership team, here at LSTM. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the advancement of global health research, impacting both local and international disadvantaged communities.

What is the role?

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, you will work closely with the Dean of Research and Innovation and the Dean of Research Culture & Integrity to drive the management and strategic direction of research services at LSTM.

You will own the service delivery model for research services across the institution, with responsibility for ensuring services are aligned to LSTM's strategy and business needs, developing the necessary capability and capacity to deliver against agreed service standards.

The successful candidate will also lead and manage the provision of comprehensive and wide-ranging professional support throughout the lifecycle of a research project, including pre-award grant administration, research contracts, research governance, and the research information system.

Additionally, the Director will be responsible for oversight of the intension to submit process, proactively soliciting and shaping research project proposals, including bringing research funding opportunities to the attention of academic colleagues and providing guidance and support in preparation of bids.

You will ensure compliance with relevant policies, and drive service development initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality, quantity, and value of research and research-related grants, consultancies and contracts. Collaborating closely with academic and professional services colleagues, the Director serves as a champion for research management and administration excellence and efficiency, ensuring the integrity of our research and the provision of high-level support and robust processes, systems, and data.

Ultimately, you will play an important role in ensuring that LSTM demonstrates the highest standards in the conduct of all research, from the planning and conduct of research to the recording and reporting of results, and the dissemination and application of findings.

You will need to demonstrate a strong commitment to advancing a positive research culture which focuses not just on research outcomes but on how we conduct our research - nurturing and rewarding openness, demonstrating good research practice, supporting others and providing fair recognition - creating an environment where staff are proud to work and an institution which partners want to collaborate and connect with.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Experience within a research-intensive environment and knowledge of the research landscape in which LSTM operates. Ability to respond to needs and challenges.
  • Experience of developing and operationalising strategic plans, including prioritisation of the allocation of resources to delivery of objectives.
  • Experience in leading and managing large, complex research operations teams; creating the conditions for service excellence and high performance from team members through personal leadership. Demonstrate an understanding of the range of functions that this directorate consists of.
  • Demonstrable experience of pre-award grant administration, research contracts, and research governance.
  • Experience in financial management related to research funding, including budgeting, cost recovery, and financial forecasting.
  • Excellent negotiation, decision-making and analytical skills with the capability to effectively problem solve in complex and dynamic situations.
  • CPD - knowledge of current trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in research performance measurement and management.
