Job Responsibility:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a six month post-CCT fellowship in Neuropsychiatry and Behavioural Neurology based at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. The remit of the postholder will be to work within the multi-disciplinary team providing care for patients who have functional neurological disorders and other disorders at the interface of brain and mind. This fellowship will provide the clinical training and experience to allow a neurologist or psychiatrist to practice independently in this field. Neuropsychiatry services at the Maudsley Hospital consist of an inpatient unit (the Lishman Unit - temporarily based at the Bethlem); outpatient services; and neuropsychiatry liaison service to Kings College Hospital (KCH) and St. Thomas' Hospital (GSTT). The Neuropsychiatry service is managed by the Psychological Medicine and Older Adults Directorate of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. The Neuropsychiatry service is also part of the Clinical Neurosciences CAG of Kings Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre. The Clinical Neurosciences CAG comprises neurology, neurosurgery and other clinical neurosciences based at Kings College Hospital, Guys Hospital and St Thomas' Hospital, as well as academic clinical neurosciences within Kings College London. There are close working relationships with neurology, neurosurgery, neurophysiology and neuroradiology. Neuropsychiatry outpatients sees approximately 650 new referrals annually, as well as having about 1000 outpatients in treatment. Referrals to the outpatient clinic are part received from local neurology teams, although almost a third of these referrals are national. Of this number approximately 50% is for Functional Neurological Disorder and related conditions. In the past 18months the service has set up a novel neurology led first assessment clinic for FND, which is where the main clinical activity for this post will take place. The fellow will be supervised by both neurologists and psychiatrists, as well as working alongside the multi-professional team at King's Health Partners. They will work across the neurology team at King's College Hospital and the neuropsychiatry team at South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM). The most common condition in this sub-speciality is functional neurological disorder (FND), which will be a key focus of the fellowship. The fellow will have exposure to all the elements of an optimal care pathway for FND and gain the competency to offer specialist assessments and treatment planning for these patients. The fellow will also gain competencies in other core areas of neuropsychiatry, including brain injury, epilepsy, movement disorders and autoimmune encephalitis. The fellow will have 1 day per week of protected time for study or research. Many aspects of the fellowship can be tailored to the specific interests or training needs of the individual. There is no on call commitment in the post. Applicants must have completed or be near to completion of higher professional training in neurology or psychiatry (within 12 months of the expected date of CCT or equivalent on taking up the post). The post has been approved by the Association of British Neurologists as an Advanced Clinical Training Fellowship.
