Job Introduction

This role is advertised as part of our BBC Extend programme for disabled people. BBC Essex is an exciting multimedia newsroom serving an audience who are distinctly different, but with a definitive Essex identity. We're looking for an experienced, versatile Journalist to join the team at BBC Essex. You'll need to be hands on and able to work right across the audio output and other platforms, on a range of shifts from production to reporting. You'll need to be a motivated, multi-skilled journalist to help shape our content, focusing on bringing to life the stories that matter to our audience.

We want a driven and passionate person who is keen to reach new audiences through our programmes and online. You'll know what audiences expect from different platforms and how to turn around a multi-platform story under a tight deadline.

The role requires someone who will be keen to do more than just look for press releases - we want original and inclusive ideas that help reflect the diverse audience in Essex.

Main Responsibilities

You'll be reporting live into programmes, producing and outputting programmes or gathering material for use on audio platforms, and for online and TV. You'll be able to use a range of audio and digital equipment to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver outputs in the appropriate medium. You may be required to present content on radio, TV or online - both live and recorded. You'll have sound editorial judgement and be able to seek out the best contributors from a wide range of backgrounds. Clear, confident communication is important and you'll have the ability to develop story ideas and produce accurate and impartial journalism, and have excellent writing skills for producing content on multiple platforms.

  • Have significant recent experience as a journalist, with a good knowledge of production techniques.
  • Be able demonstrate sound editorial and policy decisions based upon a clear understanding of the BBC's distinctive news agenda, the requirements of news and current affairs coverage and the audience.
  • Have the ability to use technology as required, in order to gather material for broadcast.
  • Understand how a team works effectively.
  • Be able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understand how individual differences can benefit the BBC.
  • Have effective planning and organising skills, ability to concentrate on several areas of work at one time, delivering consistently to deadlines and reacting positively to changes and conflicting priorities.
  • Have the ability to write creatively in an engaging manner, adapt, produce and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to differing audiences and forms of media suitable for multimedia output.
  • Be flexible and adaptable to sustain performance, particularly under pressure to meet deadlines and changing priorities and circumstances.
  • Have an understanding of health and safety procedures and how they apply to broadcasting.
