Job summary

This is an exciting time to join the Department for Business and Trade (DBT). We are the UK government department for economic growth. We support businesses to invest, grow and export, creating jobs and opportunities across the country. The roles are located in the EU, Services and Trade Analysis Team (ESTA) embedded in DBT's EU Hub.

The unit provides analytical support to the department's EU Hub for the development of our trade and investment relationship with European partner countries and the EU. Our work has significantly increased in priority following the government's ‘reset' with the EU and agreement with the European Commission to, ‘strengthen cooperation at pace' including on the economy and to hold regular leader-level Summits. The unit enhances our capability to understand and investigate the evolution and drivers of trade and investment dynamics with our European partners to provide ministers and senior officials with expert analytical advice to inform strategic decision-making including important roles in the new Industrial and Trade Strategies.

We also provide analysis to support important new domestic policies such as the UK Internal Market Act and Responsible Business Conduct The multi-disciplinary unit is hiring a Senior Social Researcher with strong technical and/or policy analysis skills and a passion for designing and delivering high quality, creative and highly impactful analysis.

Team description - TCA Impacts, Implementation and Insights Team, Europe, Services and Trade Analysis- EU, Services & Trade directorate

The unit has over 30 analysts working on EU and some domestic policies with a strong focus on sharing skills and expertise, for example coding. We hold regular social events in the office and outside.

Working alongside the colleagues, the Senior Social Researcher will provide analysis to support the TCA implementation and DBT's strategic thinking for the UK/EU economic relationship, particularly important given the government's reset of the UK/EU relationship and commitment to, ‘strengthen cooperation at pace'.

These roles support the EU Hub policy teams and European analysis teams in DBT, working closely with different professions across DBT as well as high profile work with other Government Departments including DESNZ, HMT, FCDO and CO.

Job description

The role explores the experiences of businesses trading with the EU through bespoke surveys and qualitative interviews providing the opportunity to design and deliver research projects exploring the wider business environment and sector specific deep dives.

Key functions of this role are:

Leading on the management and delivery of contracted research projects including international surveys and in-depth interviews.

Overseeing the delivery and publication (where required) of high-quality outputs from contractors.

Feeding into and supporting the design of new research projects.

Horizon scanning and the maintenance of a comprehensive review of evidence on the experiences of businesses from internal and external sources and engagement with the wider research community.

Identifying gaps in the current evidence base and developing proposals to fill them.

Experience in designing and delivering research and managing external research contracts in an applied environment - with an excellent knowledge and understanding of different qualitative and quantitative methods including survey design and analysis.

Experience of working with multiple stakeholders, often with competing priorities, to gain agreement.

Eligibility for the Government Social Research Profession.

We're looking for dynamic and energised applicants who are comfortable delivering at pace to a high quality. This role will suit someone who is highly motivated by research and trade, naturally collaborative and analytically curious.

Qualifications

Eligibility for GSR requires the candidate to hold an undergraduate degree at a minimum of 2:2. The degree must contain substantial social research methods training (comprising around one third of modules taken on the course) including quantitative research methods and at least three of the following: systematic/literature reviews; qualitative methods; interpretation of data and presentation of results; study design, hypothesis testing and application of ethics to research. OR hold an undergraduate degree at a minimum of 2:2, in any subject, or a degree equivalent (e.g. an advanced Certificate or Diploma from MRS), plus have at least 4 years' social research practice experience. Social research practice experience consists of experience working in a research agency, market research agency or specialist research team. To enter the GSR through this route you must make explicit the breadth and depth of your research experience and skills, which must include quantitative research methods and three of the following: systematic/literature reviews; qualitative methods; interpretation of data and presentation of results; study design, hypothesis testing and application of ethics to research.

    In advance of the interview, if you are not an existing member of the Government Social Research (GSR) profession, you will be required to undertake a 45 minute online written “knowledge test”. This test will be supervised and conducted online over MS Teams and involve you responding to a range of exam questions to test your technical knowledge of social research and statistical methods.

    In the interview, we will also assess your technical social research skills by asking you to present on a pre-prepared research topic which will be given to you in advance, for up to 10 minutes. An additional technical question will also be asked as part of the interview.
