PR and Communications Officer

At Beatson Cancer Charity we support and enhance the treatment, care and wellbeing of current, former and future cancer patients and their families. We work in partnership with the NHS, The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and all related facilities. We also offer the wider community a unique opportunity to contribute to the fight against cancer in the broadest possible sense.

Title:PR and Communications Officer

Reporting to:Marketing and Communications Manager

Salary:£27,500 - £30,000 (depending on experience)

Contract:Permanent, full time

Hours:35 hours per week, flexibility to work evenings and weekends, as required

Annual Leave:40 days per annum (inclusive of Public Holidays)

Pension:7% employer and 3% employee contribution

We are currently seeking a PR and Communications Officer who will contribute to PR campaigns and activity that support Beatson Cancer Charity's objectives and help maintain an effective press office service on a day-to-day basis, delivering results and being able to demonstrate success through robust evaluation.

Key Responsibilities

Media Relations:

· Deliver a timely, accurate response to media enquiries, leading on handling external requests professionally and effectively.

· To originate, produce and distribute effective support materials, such as Q&As, media briefings and lines to take.

· Organise and manage photo calls as required.

· Produce and support PR activities such as: copywriting for press releases, feature articles and other forms of public relations resources.

· Contribute creative ideas to generate content for news stories and features.

· Be aware of the national news agenda identifying opportunities and bringing issues to the attention of the Marketing and Communications Manager as appropriate.

· Maintain awareness and knowledge of initiatives across Beatson Cancer Charity and wider organisations that can add value to delivery of the Charity's objectives.

· Ensure that all media work reflects the Charity's values.

· To lead production of a monthly media monitoring report evaluating volume, tone and value of Beatson Cancer Charity's media coverage.

PR:

· To identify opportunities to promote Beatson Cancer Charity and its services via press, public relations, digital media and other marketing channels.

· To assist with the development of corporate publications and input to digital communications including social media.

· Manage the PR, media and publication budget in conjunction with the Marketing and Communications Manager.

· Undertake appropriate crisis communications/reputation management processes as required.

· Support internal communications activities as appropriate.

Monitoring Impact:

· Be responsible for up-to-date media monitoring and archive materials including external subscriptions; evaluating media coverage and PR activity for internal and external reports or for project evaluation.

· Assist with ongoing reviews and evaluations of whether the Charity is reaching the right audiences and achieving communications goals.

Relationship Management:

· Develop and maintain a strong network of media contacts, journalists, and influencers ensuring contacts are kept up-to date in a central database.

· To build relationships with media, managing and delivering an effective media relations service, working with NHS and other key partners.

· Contribute to the management of external suppliers.

· Responsible for maintaining and improving of press office presence including introduction of online platform.

Working as part of a team:

· Advise, support and brief colleagues and volunteers on press releases and undertaking media interviews.

· Work closely with the Marketing and Communications Manager and digital staff regarding online content in order to deliver rich content to support media activity.

Essential Candidate Criteria

· Educated to degree level or professional experience in a relevant discipline.

· Demonstrable experience (minimum 3 years) of working in a media environment, e.g., in a press office, PR agency or as a journalist.

· Demonstrable experience of working on charity or successful consumer-facing or behaviour change campaigns.

· Able to demonstrate effective use of social media to support PR campaigns.

· Understanding of press and broadcasting methods.

· Excellent oral and written communication skills.

· Project and time management experience.

· An understanding of the sensitivities of working for a charity, where reputation and local support are as important as the care and quality of the services delivered, together with a strong awareness of the external communications environment.

· Hold a driving license and have access to a car at all times for business use.

· Successful PVG check.

Desirable Candidate Criteria

· Member of industry community/ professional body for public relations practitioners.
