About the role

Reporting directly to our Head of Financial and Model Risk, we have a new and exciting opportunity for a Head of Model Risk Management and Validation to join us.

This role is a senior leadership position in our Financial and Model Risk Function, with the key purpose of the function being to facilitate the business in making effective risk-based decisions. With the introduction of SS1/23, you'll be able to embed model risk management into culture, process and governance.

Leadership is at the core of this position, so you'll not only lead a team of highly skilled analysts that validate the Society's critical models and calculators. You'll also lead the business in ensuring we're compliant and meeting regulatory requirements in model risk management.

Working with senior leaders in Risk and other areas of the business, you'll be at the heart of ensuring our risk models are reliable, accurate and well controlled so that we continue to offer competitive products to our members to meet their needs.

About you

It's essential that you have significant experience of advanced internal-based ratings (A-IRB) capital models and have a strong understanding of credit and finance/treasury models. You will have considerable experience of model development and/or validation, most likely within a retail bank or building society.

You'll have an advanced understanding of the regulatory framework and expectations relating to model risk management. Knowledge of SS1/23 is required, along with the ability and experience of setting model risk appetites and measures (limits and key risk indicators).

You'll be comfortable engaging with and presenting to Exec and Board level and be able to communicate information with ease and in a relevant manner to key stakeholders across the business whilst building strong relationships with them. You'll have a core strength of bringing stakeholders at multiple levels along the journey with you to enable successful outcomes.

As a people leader, you'll be committed to people development and have a track record of developing a high-performance culture against a backdrop of team collaboration, aligned with our values.

Statistical skills are imperative to this role, along with an innovative mindset. You'll be at ease with demonstrating statistical techniques, the use of data mining tools and knowledge, understanding and experience of monitoring and validating credit risk models. Knowledge and experience of programming in SAS and SQL are essential along with advanced MS Excel skills. Knowledge of balance sheet forecasting software (such as QRM) would be an advantage.
