This strategic post will lead and further develop Global Mental Health expertise at LSTM, contributing to improving health outcomes in poor/vulnerable populations in low/middle income countries. Over the past three years, LSTM has re-evaluated its diverse partnership portfolio and has developed a forward-looking strategy for sustainable, impactful, equitable partnerships, particularly in low- & middle-income countries, to deliver research, education, and knowledge exchange. Key to this forward-looking strategy is the expansion of LSTM’s work in the field of Global Mental Health.
The position holder will work collaboratively with LSTM’s working group on Global Mental Health and other partners across the world to shape global thinking in this field by providing new insights, focuses and approaches. The post holder will join the Department of International Public Health that hosts a vibrant applied health systems research community that has innovative research and equitable partnership at its core, with ethos of co-creation of research, translation of knowledge into practice’ and capacity strengthening’. The post will be based in Liverpool, working across the whole of LSTM and in partnership with our research hubs.
The Professor will work alongside other researchers in Global Mental Health to enable high-impact research, to inform global and national policies, support research capacity strengthening in low- and middle-income settings and facilitate the uptake of innovations and new information – including the development and evaluation of complex interventions. The approach to research should include an ethical, human rights-based approach that aims to reduce inequities, integrated throughout our work.
The Professor will be of exemplary international reputation in the field of Global Mental Health research and innovation.
Your role will include, but not be limited to:
Research:
- Working with lead academics and partner organizations to develop a multidisciplinary Global Mental Health Research Centre, planning research activities, and enhancing the reputation and influence of LSTM, especially in low and middle-income countries.
- Demonstrating leadership and international recognition in Global Mental Health by contributing to successful competitive external funding as a PI and through team/consortium submissions.
- Initiating, developing, leading, and publishing internationally excellent research in Global Mental Health, creating innovative methodologies and strategies to support the sustainability of the LSTM global mental health working group and partners.
Partnership:
- Contributing to the development and implementation of LSTM’s Partnership Strategy by liaising with external bodies, participating in complex negotiations, and leading the development of external partnerships and collaborations.
- Facilitating or leading interdisciplinary collaborations in research, teaching, and scholarship, enhancing cooperative efforts across different fields.
- Ensuring positive change from engagement with research beneficiaries, as well as professional, governmental, and industry partners.
Teaching and learning support:
- Taking responsibility for the general teaching and learning strategy in Global Mental Health, developing short courses, and contributing to various master’s programs.
- Ensuring the quality standards of LSTM teaching programs are met, specifically in Global Mental Health.
- Leading innovative curriculum design and the development of teaching methodologies, introducing students to cutting-edge research while maintaining LSTM’s high teaching quality standards.
External representation and income generation:
- Generating significant grant income and initiating opportunities for external funding, demonstrating the ability to attract prestigious funding sources.
- Proactively representing LSTM’s work on national and international platforms.
- Liaising with external bodies at a high level, participating effectively in complex negotiations and engaging in knowledge exchange activities in line with the UK’s Knowledge Exchange Framework.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- PhD qualification or equivalent in a relevant subject area.
- Extensive knowledge of subject area informed by substantial current research in the field.
- Knowledge of strategic leadership principles and their effective application in a HEI setting.
- Evidence of established international reputation in global health arena, related to Global Mental Health.
- Outstanding record of international level peer reviewed original publications and research, including in relation to low or middle-income countries.
- Evidence of strong strategic leadership and management skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a wide range of staff and collaborators.
