The role

About Southwark: We are the largest local authority social landlord in London, managing 55,000 homes lived in by 40% of Southwark's residents. We are home to over 18,300 businesses including iconic London venues and social enterprises and we have a young, diverse and growing population. At Southwark we are committed to making our borough just and fair and are taking positive action to tackle inequalities. Our residents and communities are our greatest asset and the passion we have for Southwark is shared by millions of Londoners who enjoy our outstanding cultural offer, use our hospitals and attend our universities. Our refreshed borough plan and focus on Southwark Stands Together, (which is our work with Southwark's communities and the council's staff to tackle racism, injustice and inequality) underpins all that we do.

About the Role:

Southwark Council is seeking two dynamic and skilled Divisional Accountants to join our Professional Finance Services (PFS) division within the Finance Department. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dedicated team that provides professional accounting and financial advisory services across the council. The PFS division is structured in a ‘hub and spoke' model, comprising three departmental finance teams and a central corporate finance team, with around 50 members of staff.

The two roles are focused on supporting Education services, with one post specifically addressing financial challenges in schools. Reporting to the Senior Finance Manager for Education and Schools, you will:

  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with budget holders to stay informed about financial developments.
  • Produce accurate monthly forecasts and high-quality finance reports.
  • Oversee year-end account closures and liaise with auditors.
  • Lead finance-related statistical and grant returns.
  • Provide support and advice on key projects to senior management.

This position not only involves regular interaction with budget holders and senior officers but also requires active participation in improving financial processes and ensuring compliance with the council's regulatory framework. You will play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of financial monitoring and reporting, ultimately supporting the council's decision-making processes.

About You:

We are looking for a dedicated professional who is either fully or part-qualified in a finance qualification such as CIPFA, ACA, CIMA, or ACCA. You should have substantial experience in financial governance, planning, decision-making, monitoring, and reporting, ideally with exposure to the education sector.

Key qualifications and skills include:

  • Essential Qualifications: Fully or part-qualified accountant (CCAB) with relevant CPD.
  • Technical Expertise: Up-to-date knowledge of local government finance, financial management systems (ideally SAP), and strong Excel skills.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to analyse complex information and innovate financial processes.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated experience in improving change management, communication, and engagement within a team.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to establish good working relationships and communicate effectively with various stakeholders.
  • Council-wide Understanding: Knowledge of equal opportunities, equality and diversity policies, performance management, and workplace safety.

Join us at Southwark Council and be a part of a team that values integrity, excellence, and community spirit.
