The International Association for Democracy (IAD) is an NGO that works to defend and advance democracy around the globe. We link people with their governments and lobby governments to promote, strengthen and safeguard democratic institutions, processes, norms and values at home and abroad. IAD is looking for a Data Protection Officer (DPO) to join our vibrant Legal Team and help us ensure IAD is GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) compliant. This role is expected to take 1-3 hours per week.

Objectives of this Role

  • Serve as the main point of contact within IAD for volunteers, the general public, regulators and relevant public authorities on issues related to data protection
  • Ensure that IAD's policies are in compliance with codes of practice such as GDPR
  • Evaluate the existing data protection framework to identify areas of no or partial compliance and rectify any issues
  • Devise training plans and provide data protection advice to volunteers
  • Inform and advise the data controller or data processor on all matters related to data protection
  • Promote a culture of data protection and compliance across all of IAD's units

Responsibilities

  • Provide advice and educate volunteers on important data compliance requirements
  • Draft new and amend existing internal data protection policies, guidelines and procedures, in consultation with key stakeholders
  • Deliver training across all business units to volunteers who are involved in data handling or processing
  • Conduct audits to ensure compliance and to address potential issues
  • Maintain records of all data processing activities of the company
  • Serve as point of contact for data protection authorities

Skills and Qualifications

  • Knowledge in data protection laws and practices, including a deep understanding of GDPR
  • Experience in data protection compliance or related field
  • Previous experience as a DPO for an NGO in the UK, or EU/EEA would be a unique advantage
  • Strong project management skills
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and to manage sensitive and confidential information
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with strong attention to detail
  • Fluent in English
  • Passion for democracy, rule of law and human rights
