The role:

The main purpose of this role is to support the development and maintenance of the Aspen View of Risk (for modelled natural catastrophe risk) through model research and validation. This role involves keeping up to date with model vendor developments and updates, scientific opinions, market trends and changes, climate change, and underwriting objectives, in addition to validating vendor models and providing technical advice to both CRM and Underwriting teams regarding models, model adjustments and event response.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategy and Planning

  • Assist in the review and improvement of catastrophe model change or Aspen View of Risk development, with a focus on model evaluation and validation.
  • Work with CRM Heads to deliver on requests from key stakeholders such as (but not limited to) Underwriting and Risk teams (e.g event response, climate change queries, etc)

Policy, Process and Procedures

  • Ensure model research and validation projects are appropriately documented for different audiences (underwriters, management, regulators)
  • Establish approaches and methods for model validation and research that can be applied consistently across projects.
  • Ensure model research and validation projects meet any specific regulatory requirements (e.g. Lloyds minimum standards)

Environmental Awareness/Customer Focus

  • Collaborate with colleagues (particularly within CRM, but also Underwriting, Exposure Management, Risk Management, ACM and Capital as required) to understand differing requirements regarding Aspen View of Risk.
  • Communicate model research & validation projects to key internal & external stakeholders (e.g. CRM, underwriters, CRM / EM governance committees, regulators)
  • Leverage strong external relationships with model vendors, brokers, industry and academic experts to further Aspen's understanding of natural catastrophe risk.

Technical Performance

  • Actively participate in model validation. Review 3rd party catastrophe model methodologies identifying strengths and weaknesses. Opine on the suitability of models and develop adjustments where appropriate.
  • Offer technical advice on models.
  • Provide feedback on the appropriateness of broker view and market adjustments.

Skills & Experience:

  • Masters degree in Geography, Mathematics, Science, or other natural hazard related discipline
  • 5+ years hands-on cat modelling, exposure management, or portfolio analysis experience;
  • Qualified or highly experienced in quantitative and analytical tools, including Microsoft Office suite and SQL
  • Technical experience with hazard and vulnerability data manipulation and programming (SQL preferred)
  • Experience with undertaking model validation and research projects
  • Experience with making adjustments to vendor cat models
  • Highly proficient in manipulating, merging, and cleaning or checking data from multiple sources
  • Ability to plan, prioritise and manage workload effectively and efficiently
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment both across entities and the Group
  • Ability to communicate technical issues
  • Strong reasoning capabilities - creative and lateral thinking, with strong problem-solving-skills
  • Ability to build strong relationships with business units to help them identify, prioritise and monitor concerns relating to cat models and nat cat risk.
  • Ability to liaise with relevant internal and external groups (e.g. brokers, vendor modelling companies) to understand varying opinions on nat cat
  • Ability to identify reasons for differences between cat models in a given peril region
