We are looking for a passionate individual to join our team as a Professor in Health Economics. The successful candidate will work jointly across the Department of International Public Health and Department of Clinical Sciences at LSTM.

This strategic post will lead and further develop Health Economics expertise at LSTM, contributing to improving health outcomes in poor/vulnerable populations in low/middle income countries. We are looking to attract a candidate with an outstanding international research reputation, with the collaborative leadership skills and experience to lead and enhance a multi-disciplinary team of health economists.

As a proven leader, you will provide a stimulating, collegial and well managed environment to support the integration of excellent teaching, research and business activities. You will also need to possess the intellectual credibility to lead on research grants in applied health research and delivery in low/middle income countries.

The successful post-holder will have the ability to liaise, influence and develop external strategic relationships with health economists at other HEIs in the UK and globally, as well as with Ministries of Health, Ministries of Finance and key funding agencies to increase the potential impact of research.

Recent Research Excellence Framework results have ranked LSTM 2nd for research impact in the UK, and 12th overall. This represents a superb return on outputs, with nearly 50% of our publications scoring 4* (World leading) in our A1 (clinical medicine) submission.

This success has arisen from diverse fields including advancing clinical care and prevention in HIV and TB, HIV self-testing, evidence synthesis, snakebite, advances in the control of malaria in pregnancy and vector control.

Your role will include, but not be limited to:

Research:

  • Grow and sustain a multidisciplinary Health Economics research programme, planning and coordinating broad research activity/sustain an extensive track record of published research findings in high impact peer reviewed journals and maintain an expert reputation in HE to an international level
  • Initiate, develop, lead and publish ground-breaking research that is of global relevance, with a particular focus in low and middle-income countries
  • Work with, and lead, academics in LSTM in developing cutting edge capacity and innovative methodologies for health economics research in health systems and policy analysis.
  • Formulate, communicate, and deliver a clear vision and strategy for attracting funds to generate research that is internationally excellent, and contributes to the sustainability of LSTM and its subsidiary companies.

Partnerships:

  • Develop and lead strategically important global partnerships and collaborations including participating effectively in complex negotiations.
  • Proactively and professionally represent the work of LSTM nationally and internationally.
  • Influence and participate in high level regional, national and global level collaborations and demonstrate a successful record of leadership and driving change using research led evidence

Teaching and Learning Support:

  • Take responsibility for the general teaching and learning strategy as applicable to own academic field
  • Lead on innovative curriculum design and development of teaching methodology as applicable to own academic field
  • Introduce students to cutting edge research and its impact, delivering teaching to the quality standards expected of LSTM teaching programmes

External representation & income generation:

  • Generate grant income/initiate opportunities for external funding, with a proven ability to attract significant high prestige funding
  • Proactively and professionally represent the work of LSTM nationally and internationally

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject area
  • Extensive knowledge of subject area informed by substantial current research in the field
  • Knowledge of strategic leadership principles and their effective application in a HEI setting
  • Evidence of established international reputation in academic field
  • Outstanding record of international level peer reviewed original publications and research, including in relation to low or middle-income countries
  • Experience of developing and sustaining long-term academic partnerships with a range of LMIC organisations
  • Evidence of strong strategic leadership and management skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a wide range of staff and collaborators
