Overview of project/role

The Travel Mentor team currently has a vacancy, creating an exciting opportunity to join our committed and hardworking team.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated, people-orientated person with experience in supporting disabled people to achieve their goals.

Your core purpose will be to support and mentor people with varying disabilities and/or mobility issues, who desire to become independent travellers. You will be working with a wide range of age groups from aged 10 years through to senior adults.

You'll be part of a small team and capable of working collaboratively as well as independently. You'll travel and work all over London in what is predominantly a remote working arrangement.

It's important that you can confidently travel using all TfL modes of transport and be able to walk varied distances when necessary. You'll have responsibility for the safety and welfare of those you're working with.

You'll also be working with schools, colleges, local groups, and individuals, and expected to give group talks / deliver presentations, contributing to mentoring and TfL initiatives, as well as attending internal and external meetings.

Key Accountabilities

Your duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Providing travel mentoring support to disabled Londoners to overcome barriers to using public transport and/or undertaking active travel journeys.
  • Delivering individual accompanied journeys to disabled people wishing to travel independently anywhere in London.
  • Working strategically with local disability organisations and local authority staff to promote accessible transport options in London.
  • Promote current schemes/projects and help to develop new ones that can help to improve confidence on the TfL network.
  • Communicate and engage with our key strategic stakeholders, infrastructure bodies, accessibility organisations, sustainable transport groups, cycling and walking organisations, charities, passenger groups, watchdogs, and schools to raise awareness of the service.
  • Administrative and record keeping duties to support the above

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Skills

  • Good verbal and written communication skills including experience of delivering PowerPoint presentations and face to face presentations (Essential)
  • Good administrative skills including the use of Excel, Word and Outlook (Essential)

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the public transport system in London (Essential)
  • Knowledge of the social model of disability (Essential)
  • Knowledge of the barriers faced by disabled and older Londoners in using public transport services (Desirable)

Experience

  • Experience of working with disabled people (Essential)
  • Experience of working in a mentoring/teaching/training role (Essential)
  • Experience of working as part of a team, showing commitment to team goals and objectives (Essential)
