Scientific Officer

Job description South Cambridgeshire District Council is an ambitious Council with an exciting green agenda for the future. We want to improve the quality of life for our residents, develop sustainable communities, and drive economic growth and prosperity. We're proud of what we've achieved so far, and we're committed to doing even better in the future. What sets us apart from other organisations is our range of projects, including meeting the planning needs of Europe's most important area of biotechnology research, development and growth, the delivery of two new towns at Northstowe and Waterbeach and nationally significant infrastructure projects in an area surrounding the fastest-growing city economy in the country. We are looking for a Scientific Officer to work alongside other dedicated specialist officers within the Environment Planning Team, which is responsible for matters relating to Air Quality, Contaminated Land and considering the impact (such as noise, vibration, odour and lighting) on the health of both existing and prospective human receptors. You will have the chance to work on a wide range of both residential and commercial planning applications, major developments and infrastructure works as well as lead on the council's statutory duty to Air Quality, including the submission of DEFRA's Air Quality Annual Status Report, IPPC and the implementation of the key priorities within the Greater Cambridge Air Quality Strategy. Our ideal candidate will have a good knowledge and experience of the full range of environmental protection legislation with a particular emphasis on the successful candidate leading on the scientific discipline of Air Quality and providing support in Contaminated Land. Further training in these areas will be provided and supported to the right candidate as well as the opportunity of working within an enthusiastic, supportive team around you to help you grow and develop your career. We know how important it is to find a job where you feel valued and have the flexibility to achieve a good work / life balance. With that in mind, we're adopting a hybrid, flexible approach. We work in the best place for the job rather than having hard and fast rules about being in the office five days a week. As a result, this role will see you given the true flexibility to work from home and one of our offices, as required although we typically come together in-person at our offices at least once a week. The successful candidate is expected to do this, to collaborate, share ideas and learn from each other. There are many more benefits to working for us too, not least our structured pay scales, secure, generous pension and flexible hours. We are currently taking part in a 4 day working week (32 hours per week) to improve recruitment and retention and support the wellbeing of our colleagues. You can read more about it here 4-day week trial or talk to us about the detail of this flexible benefit we have been offering. For more information about this job opportunity please contact Peter Gibson on 07749 711511 or Claire Sproats on 01954 713444.
