Job Description :
Development Officer
Job description The Communities team is seeking a Development Officer, for a one-year fixed term contract (maternity cover), to work within the exciting environment of the new town of Northstowe, located eight miles northwest of Cambridge, which will eventually become a town of 10,000 plus homes. Across the Council, Development Officers are responsible for delivering a wide range of functions, often alongside partners, in order to ensure that our communities, existing and new, are active, inclusive and safe, well run, well connected, well served, environmentally sensitive, fair for everyone, thriving, well designed and built. For Development Officers supporting the growth of new communities, duties include involvement in the planning process, so that the right community infrastructure is put in place to support the health and wellbeing of these communities and to allow them to thrive. Whilst development is underway, Development Officers are required to liaise with master developers, housebuilders, town planners, management companies, local authorities, affordable housing providers and of course residents to ensure that communities become connected, self-supporting and resilient. Development Officers play a key role in engaging with communities and realising the Council’s vision of making new communities great places in which to live. At Northstowe this means building relationships with master developers Urban&Civic and Homes England, internal teams at SCDC, Greenbelt (Management and Maintenance company) and with town and county councils, to ensure effective communication on matters effecting the development and residents. Prior to delivery of the permanent community centre in spring 2026, the role will also encompass some aspects of management of The Cabin, the temporary community centre provided by South Cambridgeshire District Council that is currently in use. The Development Officer also manages the team of Community Development Officers (x2) working in Northstowe, providing them support to fulfil their roles. With just over 15% of the new homes built at Northstowe, this is an exciting time to join the team. If you are able to demonstrate
- Effective relationship building with partners/stakeholders
- An understanding of the housing development landscape
- Contract management
- Team management
