Temporary Research Assistant - Exploring Hope Through Nature in the Face of CrisisDuration: Initially 3 Months (Part-Time)
Location: Flexible, with potential field site visits in the UK/Europe
Hours: Up to 20 hours per week (Up to 260 hours total)
Salary: Grade E, £19.62 per hour (£17.51 + £2.11 holiday pay)
About the Project: This project explores how nature itself embodies hope in the face of crisis. Against the backdrop of the climate and biodiversity emergency, geopolitical instability, and corporate backsliding, it examines how plants, trees, and fungi demonstrate resilience, survival, and renewal in the most challenging conditions. Aimed at the general public and managerial decision-makers, the research is grounded in scientific studies and real-world fieldwork, identifying ecological sites that showcase nature's ability to regenerate and heal itself. We are seeking a Research Assistant to support this project by conducting literature reviews, identifying relevant ecological research, and pinpointing case studies that demonstrate nature's resilience in action. This role is ideal for someone with a strong interest in environmental science, ecology, and social sciences, who is eager to contribute to a meaningful, interdisciplinary exploration of hope.
Key Responsibilities:- Conduct a comprehensive review of academic literature on hope within the social sciences.
- Identify and summarize key research in ecology and environmental science, particularly focused on natural regeneration and resilience.
- Research and compile a list of potential field site visits in the UK/Europe, where ecosystems demonstrate self-healing properties (e.g., reforestation sites, mycoremediation projects, urban biodiversity initiatives).
- Organize findings into clear, well-structured reports to inform the research.
- Collaborate with the project lead to refine research directions and explore additional sources of information.
Who We're Looking For:- A senior undergraduate or master's student in a relevant discipline (e.g., Environmental Science, Ecology, Geography, Sociology, or a related field).
- Strong research skills, with experience in conducting academic literature reviews.
- Interest in the intersection of nature, climate resilience, and social impact.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, stay organised, and manage multiple research threads.
- Familiarity with academic databases (e.g., Google Scholar, JSTOR) is a plus.
- A proactive and curious mindset, with enthusiasm for translating complex research into accessible insights for a general audience.
To Apply: Please send a brief cover letter outlining your interest in the role and relevant experience, along with your CV, to Anna Wych - a.c.wych@exeter.ac.uk. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
Temporary Worker engagement: The successful candidate will be engaged to work as a temporary worker under the University's temporary worker terms and conditions. You will be expected to complete a separate registration form, and conduct a right to work check, before any work starts.
