Job Responsibility:

What are the landscapes of England? How do you manage historic landscapes and World Heritage landscapes? Join us as an Associate Lecturer teaching on Birkbeck's undergraduate Archaeology programme this Summer term.

As a fixed-term, Associate Lecturer, you will teach:

  • Archaeological Landscapes - level 6
  • 30 hours
  • Wednesdays, 6-9pm April to July 2025

As Associate Lecturer, you will deliver a single, 30 credit, module in the School of Historical Studies, including lectures, seminars, site-visits, and associated assessment supervision and marking.

On this module we explore archaeological approaches to landscape and examine theoretical debate alongside applied case studies and site visits to explain human experiences of associated spaces.

We will explore landscapes as created through: literature and art; archaeological endeavour; experiencing humanly defined space in site visits. There will be a site visit to the World Heritage Site around the Tower of London and an optional visit to a medieval townscape in Ely, Cambridgeshire. Topics for each of the ten weeks can be supplied if requested.

To succeed as Associate Lecturer, you will have:

  • good knowledge of historiographical and theoretical debates in archaeology and landscape studies, and have completed, or be near completion, of a PhD,
  • excellent communication and presentation skills and some experience teaching a diverse group of students at undergraduate level is essential,
  • a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and experience of providing support to students in order to enable them to complete their studies successfully, and to undertake all related course administrative duties.

This is an illness cover position, so the module description and content has already been set.

Remuneration:

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £68.13 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier' at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
